Tybar Lifts Cowboys Past No. 47 California

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Oklahoma State's men's tennis team defeated the No. 47 California Golden Bears, 4-2, Thursday afternoon at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
The 32nd-ranked Cowboys benefited from sophomore Maxim Tybar's performance in singles and doubles on the way to their first win over a ranked opponent this season.
In doubles play, Tybar teamed up with junior Mathieu Scaglia to defeat Cal's Yuta Kikuchi and Jacob Brumm, 6-1. Brady Draheim and Matej Vocel bested Jack Malloy and Mert Zincirli, 6-4, on court three, which gave the doubles point to the Cowboys for the second straight match.
In singles play, the Bears quickly reclaimed the lead with wins on courts six and two. But on court four, sophomore Luke Hammond defeated Ben Draper, 6-1, 6-7, 6-1, to tie the match at two.
Freshman Emile Hudd gave the Cowboys the lead with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory on court five. The Cowboys were up 3-2 with two matches to go.
Tybar provided the match-clinching point on court three, where he defeated Jack Malloy, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2.
This was the first meting between the two schools since 2016. The Cowboys closed Cal's all-time series lead to 3-2.
The Cowboys (7-4, 0-0 Big 12) are in action this weekend at the 130th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships in La Jolla beginning Thursday night and continuing through Sunday.
The Cowboys are also scheduled to face Villanova for a dual match Saturday night at 7 p.m. (CST) in San Diego.
