CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Oklahoma State softball senior Madi Sue Montgomery reset the school record books Friday, as she became the school's all-time runs batted in leader and tied the program's single-game RBI mark in a 15-5 run-rule win over San Diego State at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Montgomery went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and a bases-clearing double against the Aztecs to match the OSU single-game RBI record with eight runs batted in. She joins Kristin "Red" Reasnor and Julie Ward as the holders of that record.
"In the first game, it was great to win. I thought our bats came alive and we had some good performances," coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I"m just really excited for Madi Sue. When you play in a program like this - with all the history, the tradition and the All-Americans and all of the great players who have played here - to break this type of record is a big deal. To have that record in her hands now is a really special deal and I'm really happy for her."
Montgomery's first hit of the day came in the bottom of the second inning, as she skied a double to the wall in left center, bringing home three Cowgirls and making it a 5-2 ballgame. The three-run double brought Montgomery level with former Cowgirl great Tiffany Mikkelson for the school's career RBI mark at 166.
The senior infielder wasted no time in staking her claim to the throne in her next at-bat, which saw Montgomery smash a two-run home run over the right-field wall, giving her the school record and OSU an 8-5 advantage in the bottom of the fourth.
The Cowgirls scored six runs in total in that game-breaking fourth inning, putting OSU in run-rule territory as the Cowgirls headed to the fifth inning with a 12-5 lead.
Montgomery was again the run supplier in the fifth, sending the first pitch she saw straight over the fence in center field to secure the Cowgirls' 15-5 win with a three-run walk-off home run.
The multi-homer outing was Montgomery's first time blasting multiple home runs in a single game since hitting two against then-No. 16 Baylor on April 13, 2018. She is now just seven home runs away from matching Mikkelson's program record in that category as well.
In the nightcap, Montgomery was one of only a few Cowgirl bats to get on the stat sheet against Arizona ace Taylor McQuillin, as she recorded one of only two hits in OSU's 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Wildcats.
Arizona scored one run in each of the game's first three innings, with four walks and three defensive errors helping the nation's No. 14 team notch the early advantage.
OSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Cowgirls were unable to flip the scoreline in what was their best offensive opportunity of Friday's nightcap.
In the circle, senior Samantha Show overcame her early struggles to retire the last 10 batters she faced in a complete-game showing. She is the first Cowgirl pitcher to throw a complete game in three consecutive starts since Brandi Needham threw four straight in May 2017.
"We just ran into a buzzsaw in the second game. I thought their girl threw really well," Gajewski said. "I thought Sam Show threw really good as well, but we just couldn't get anything going. Credit them. They made us look pretty bad at times. We just have to figure out a way to fight, adjust and take better at-bats against good teams, good arms and take advantages of good performances like Sam had."
The loss snapped OSU's six-game winning streak, but the Cowgirls will get a quick chance to start another run when they square off with Colorado State in the finale of a five-game weekend tomorrow. First pitch was moved up to 11 a.m. CT, one hour prior to the previously scheduled time, due to changes in the tournament schedule after inclement weather halted several teams in action Thursday night.
