Cowgirls Falter in Nutter Classic Finale
February 23, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The No. 20 Oklahoma State softball team was edged by Colorado State, 2-1, on Saturday in the Cowgirls' final game of the 2019 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
The loss drops OSU to 10-5 on the year. That marks the best 15-game start by a Cowgirl team since the 2014 squad posted the same record through its first three weeks.
Oklahoma State struggled offensively all day long against Colorado State starter Jessica Jarecki, amassing only six hits off the Rams' ace. Jarecki has allowed only four earned runs in 37 innings pitched for CSU this season.
Colorado State built off the early momentum Jarecki provided her team, scoring the game's first run in the Rams' first trip to plate. CSU added one more run on a double to the wall in left-center field in the bottom of the sixth, just minutes after Samantha Show tied the game with a solo shot to center in the top of the frame.
Show got another opportunity to tie it up, or push the Cowgirls into the lead, as she stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the top the seventh. The senior looked to catch Jarecki early in the count, but popped up the first pitch she saw to the catcher, ending the game in Colorado State's favor.
OSU starter Logan Simunek pitched well despite taking the loss for Saturday's result, as she allowed only two runs on three hits in a season-high six innings pitched. The loss drops Simunek to 3-2 this season.
The Pokes return to the friendly confines of Cowgirl Stadium next weekend for their first home games of the season. OSU will host Seattle, Syracuse, McNeese State and Northern Iowa twice as part of the OSU/Tulsa Invitational.
Play gets underway Friday, with the Cowgirls set to face Seattle at 2:30 p.m. CT and Syracuse immediately after on opening day. The matchup against the Orange will feature the return of three-time All-American Vanessa Shippy, who is now an assistant coach at Syracuse.
