Cowboy Quick Hits
No. 2 Oklahoma State wrestling (14-0, 8-0 Big 12) boasts nine wins over top-25 opponents this season, including a victory against undefeated No. 5 Missouri Feb. 16. The team's final dual is set this weekend against No. 3 Iowa, who is also undefeated this season. According to the Intermatrankings, Daton Fix and Derek White garner the Pokes' highest positions again this week at No. 2 in their respective weight classes. Fix knocked off his eighth ranked opponent at Missouri, No. 10 John Erneste, and White sealed the dual win for the Cowboys with a takedown in sudden victory.
Â
The Basics
The Cowboys welcome the No. 3 Hawkeyes to Gallagher-Iba Arena on Sunday for the teams' 53rd meeting in one of college wrestling's most historical and tightly contested rivalries. Both lineups feature nine ranked wrestlers. The Hawkeyes have beaten seven ranked teams on the year. OSU leads the series in Stillwater, 14-6-2. John Smith is the winningest coach on either side of the rivalry with 17 wins over Iowa, which is two more dual wins than Dan Gable claimed in his time in Iowa City. The two programs combine for an astounding 57 NCAA team titles, 225 individual titles and 791 All-America honors.Â
Â
Meeting of Unbeatens Â
The Cowboys and Hawkeyes are two of the remaining three unbeaten teams in NCAA DI wrestling this season. Iowa defeated the Cowboys in Iowa City last season, 20-12, taking six of the 10 bouts from OSU and marking one of only two losses for the Pokes in 2018. A win over the Hawkeyes would give Oklahoma State it's 46th undefeated season in program history and its first since 2005. John Smith looks to notch his seventh perfect dual season as head coach of the Cowboys.Â
Â
Top-10 Bouts
125 : No. 4 Nick Piccininni vs. No. 2 Spencer Lee – Piccininni and Lee have met twice in their careers with Lee taking both bouts. The most recent loss for the Cowboy was at the NCAA Championships last season, when Lee notched a fall. Piccininni is undefeated this season, and Lee has lost only one bout to top-ranked Sebastian Rivera (Northwestern).Â
133 : No. 2 Daton Fix vs. No. 3 Austin DeSanto – Fix is no stranger to top-notch opponents, having faced nine and defeated eight in his redshirt freshman campaign. DeSanto has lost only one bout on the season, falling to Iowa State's Austin Gomez at the beginning of December. Fix has defeated Gomez twice via decision this season.Â
165 : No. 10 Chandler Rogers vs. No. 2 Alex Marinelli – Rogers has won two matches since returning from a Southern Scuffle injury that sidelined him for more than a month. The Cowboy has lost two bouts on the season. Marinelli has no losses this year, and in the pair's single meeting, defeated Rogers, 5-2.Â
197 | No. 6 Preston Weigel vs. No. 4 Jacob Warner – Weigel has only six bouts to his credit this season, battling back from injury, and matches up with a tough freshman in Warner. Warner is 13-2 on the year with losses coming against Tanner Sloan (South Dakota State) and Rocco Caywood (Army).Â
HWT : No. 2 Derek White vs. No. 8 Sam Stoll – White has lost just one bout on the season entering the Cowboys' final dual against Iowa. He has wins over four ranked wrestlers and in his senior campaign has racked up all seven career falls. Stoll defeated White in Iowa City in the previous season in sudden victory 2. The Hawkeye has lost this season to Nebraska's David Jensen and Wisconsin's Trent Hillger.Â
