• The Basics
With its do-it-all point guard, Isaac Likekele, out with an illness, Oklahoma State had its 7-0 start spoiled by a resurgent Georgetown squad on Wednesday night. Lindy Waters III dropped in a career-high 29 points and Cameron McGriff added 20 points, but the Hoyas shot 45.3 percent and out-rebounded the Pokes, 43-29, to hand OSU its first loss of the season. The Cowboys now turn their attention to regional rival Wichita State, which is also off to a 7-1 start and features one of the nation's most potent defenses led by head coach Gregg Marshall.
• On the Air
The Cowboys and Shockers will square off on ESPNU with Chuckie Kempf and former Baylor standout King McClure on the call. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m., and the webcast can be seen on the WatchESPN app or ESPN.com. As always, Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb will have the Cowboy Radio Network call from the historic white maple floor of GIA.
• Lock-Down Cowboys
Expect a defensive slugfest when Wichita State and Oklahoma State battle on Sunday. The Cowboys employ a high-pressure defense that ranks eighth nationally in 3-point field goal defense (25.4 percent) and 11th in overall field goal defense (35.8 percent). Overall, OSU ranks 16th in the country in defensive efficiency and 13th in block percentage (16.5 percent) according to KenPom. Thanks in large part to it's bulldog point guard Isaac Likekele and rim-protector Yor Anei, the Cowboys have held four opponents under 34 percent shooting. Ole Miss shot just 25.9 percent from the floor, which was the lowest by an OSU opponent since 2015.
• The Series With Wichita State
Oklahoma State leads the overall series Wichita State, 30-9, including a 15-3 edge in Stillwater. However, the Shockers snapped a three-game losing streak overall in the series and a four-game losing streak in GIA with a 78-66 win over the Cowboys on Dec. 9, 2017. Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall is in his 13th season in charge and is 1-1 against OSU, with the road team winning both matchups.
• Cowboys-Shockers Renew Rivalry
Mike Boynton and Oklahoma State are beginning a four-year hardwood series with Wichita State. The Shockers will visit GIA in 2019 and 2021 and the Cowboys will make return trips to Wichita in 2020 and 2022. The 2020 matchup will take place at Intrust Bank Arena, a 15,004-seat venue in downtown Wichita. The site of the 2022 matchup in Wichita will be announced at a later date. Only 125 miles separate the two schools, which have shared a rivalry dating back to 1934.
