10 In 25 ... Casey Kendrick
December 26, 2019 | Cowgirl Basketball
Lists are fun. It is interesting to get a perspective of people that have seen certain things for a long time and may have insight the rest of us do not have. However, when asked to create a list it becomes nerve racking. The fear is you have forgotten someone or your memory is somehow skewed. And in my 25 years of calling Cowgirl basketball I have seen good athletes, good basketball players and good leaders. Occasionally, they are all three and that's when the player truly becomes great. With that said, here is my list of top 10 Cowgirls (in no particular order) I have seen since beginning with Oklahoma State 25 years ago:
Andrea Riley—Undoubtedly the greatest athlete OSU has had in women's basketball. She had speed and athleticism in which few Big 12 opponents had a defensive answer. She left OSU as the leading scorer and its leader in assists. She made everyone on the floor greater. Andrea was literally unguardable. She could create her shot any time she was asked to do so.
Tiffany Bias—Coach Littell always says she never lost a sprint in practice and her motor was unmatched. She overcame Riley's assist record before she was done and she too elevated the team's play when she was on the floor. Her greatness was completed by her willingness to play defense as well.
Brittney Martin—Very few players in the women's game have the ability to elevate and shoot over defenders the way Brittney could. She made it look effortless. She is the only Cowgirl to record a triple-double. And her team's made it to three NCAA tournaments during her tenure at OSU.
Stacy Coffey—Stacy was the most relentless player on the defensive end of the floor. Stacey helped on both ends of the floor, but her legacy was her ability to steal the ball. She is the career leader in steals by a mile and her numbers will be hard to ever be reached. She was simply a dominant defensive force.
Trisha Skibbe—Trisha played big. She was terrific at playing with her back to the basket. Her quickness inside allowed her to get to the rim and put up great numbers. Skibbe could also step out and hit a big shot when needed.
Kaylee Jensen—Kaylee got away from Nebraska and made the most of her time in Stillwater. She was powerful, strong and imposing, but Kaylee had great touch on her shot. She finished around the rim extremely well and she could step out and hit a 3 as well. If she trailed a fast break play opposing bigs had to find her because she might just as well stop and pop as well as back you down to the rim!
Loryn Goodwin—When you have the tradition of point guards Oklahoma State possesses—it's tough on incoming players-especially if you're on here for one year. Loryn Goodwin accepted that challenge and excelled! Her body control and vision along with her strength made her a great player. Like her predecessors at the position she was a fierce competitor.
Toni Young—could dunk! Before Brittney Griner was showcasing dunks—Toni Young made her way to OSU and was one of the first legitimate kids in the country that could dunk. She was freakishly gifted with her athleticism. She could score on the offensive end and she could alter shots on the other end—often sending opponents shots soaring into the stands.
Liz Donohoe—Liz finished her career as one of the best 3-point shooters in Cowgirl history. She was a pure 3 shooter. She had a quick release and wreaked havoc on opponents trying to defend her. Liz was also a good rebounder leading her team in that category in 2011-2012.
Jennifer Crow—Jennifer was always the victim of the opponent's scouting report. Despite being the top target to stop for Oklahoma State she still managed to get her shot and bury it! Probably the purest of all the 3-point shooters OSU has ever had! She led her team in scoring three-straight years and in rebounding one of those years. She was an Academic All-Big 12 player—rounding out her total offering to OSU.
Honorable mentions:
Danielle Green—One of the grittiest players OSU has ever had. Her presence at OSU helped lead the turnaround of the program from 0-16 to the Sweet 16 in 2 seasons! Sometimes overlooked for not having stats that we typically think of—but her moxie was contagious!
Renee Roberts –Very athletic, terrific player—good leader for OSU.
Tari Cummings—she was only here for a couple of years, but Tari was at the forefront of the new kind of athlete in women's basketball. She was long, lean and could get up and down the floor.
