10 In 30 ... Larry Reece
December 10, 2019 | Cowgirl Basketball
In honor of Larry Reece's 30 years as the public address announcer for Cowgirl Basketball, he shared his list of the top 10 OSU players he has had the pleasure of seeing take the historic white maple floor inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Tiffany Bias — I've heard our coaches joke that Tiffany must have a third lung because she never got tired. She broke Andrea Riley's assist record at OSU and went on to win a WNBA Championship in her rookie season. She is one of our most popular Cowgirls and continues to be a great representative of all things bright orange.
Liz Brown — A two-time Big 8 Player of the Year. I'm partial to this one and not only because I loved saying "from Roff, Oklahoma!" You see Liz Brown was the first truly great player I ever got to call games for. She was a coach on the floor, much like Sean Sutton. OSU fans got to watch these two floor generals around the same time, including the 1990-91 seasons. It was Liz's senior campaign and she did not disappoint. Dick Halterman's Big 8 champion squad hosted an NCAA Tournament first-round game that season. A young student announcer introduced the opponent as the Michigan State "Wolverines". The visiting fans didn't like that too much, but what they liked less was Liz Brown bouncing the basketball at midcourt with the clock winding down in the third overtime. The point guard waited until about the 8-second mark, dribbled to just inside the top of the key and drained the game winner. Liz Brown was a gamer!
Stacey Coffey — Some people just have a knack for getting their hands on the ball, Stacey Coffey was a master thief. In fact, of the top seven single-season steal totals recorded Stacey has four. She had an uncanny ability to come up with a steal, much like Brooks Thompson, and OSU fans got to watch them both do work in the early to mid 90's. I lost count of how many times OSU fans said "how did they do that?" This Cowgirl from Okarche, Oklahoma was a great player on both ends of the floor and she still holds the all-time steals record by more than 100 takeaways.
Jennifer Crow — The best pure shooter I have witnessed for the Cowgirls. Give her a little opening and she would play string music. That's the reason why she is second all-time in made 3-pointers and third in scoring. The pride of Corn, Oklahoma.
Kaylee Jensen — Kaylee could do it all… soft touch around the basket, use her body to get position to score or to get the crucial rebound. She recorded the second-most career double-doubles behind only Clinette Jordan. (Note: Clinette would make this list, but I missed her by one season.) Kaylee was terrific on the court and in the classroom.
Brittney Martin — Her fall away jumper is something you are more likely to see in the NBA. She had such a soft touch on her jumper. She is fourth in career points scored and second in career rebounds and all with unselfish play.
Lisa McGill — If OSU ever had a Charles Barkley-type player then her name is Lisa McGill. The 6-foot undersized center from Dallas finished her career with 1,019 rebounds, ranking her third all time. She is sixth in career scoring. She teamed up with Liz Brown on back-to-back Big 8 Tournament Championship teams.
Andrea Riley — The top three scoring seasons in OSU Cowgirl history go to Andrea Riley, Andrea Riley and Andrea Riley. Kurt Budke told her to shoot, but what may surprise you is that she also has four of the top 12 all-time assist seasons. Andrea was also small in stature, but would fearlessly drive to the hole. She was asked as a freshman at Homecoming and Hoops who should have the ball in their hands with the game on the line? This new Cowgirl said with all of her personality, "hate to toot my own horn, but beep-beep!" You ask me who is the greatest of them all and it's the same answer… Beep-Beep!
Trisha Skibbe — This Cowgirl is in the top 10 in points scored, rebounds, double-doubles and blocked shots. Extra credit for marrying Final 4 Cowboy Joey Graham.
Toni Young — Gallagher-Iba Arena has had its share of high flyers… Desmond Mason, Markel Brown and Toni Young. She could dunk the basketball but there is one dunk we all wish she hadn't tried. Toni could elevate to score or rebound like no other Cowgirl I've seen.
