LOS ANGELES – Oklahoma State's 2019 season came to an end Friday as the 12th-ranked Cowgirls suffered a 3-1 loss to No. 20 Santa Clara in the second round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship at Soni McAlister Field.
The Cowgirls, who were a No. 3 national seed in the NCAA tourney, end their season with a 16-3-3 record. Along the way, OSU captured the seventh Big 12 Conference championship in program history with its second regular season title in the last three years and climbed to as high as No. 9 in the national rankings.
Five Cowgirls earned All-Big 12 honors, the second-highest total in program history, and Colin Carmichael was named the conference's coach of the year for a record sixth time.
Santa Clara, which has not lost since Sept. 22, improved to 15-5-2 in advancing to the Sweet 16.
The Broncos opened the scoring at the 19:32 mark when Kelsey Turnbow collected the ball at the top of the box and delivered a shot top shelf to the far post for her 15th goal of the season and a 1-0 advantage.
Santa Clara doubled its lead less than a minute later after a play that proved very costly for the Cowgirls. Kim Rodriguez fouled Turnbow in the box and was issued a red card at the 20:20 mark; the Broncos converted the penalty kick to go up 2-0, and OSU was forced to play the remaining 70 minutes a player down.
OSU fell behind 3-0 in the 55th minute on Izzy D'Aquila's 15th goal of the year, but the Cowgirls would not go quietly and continued to battle despite the odds.
With just under two minutes remaining, the Cowgirls got on the board when Gabriella Coleman collected her ninth goal of the season off an assist from Charmé Morgan.
Santa Clara finished the match with a 20-4 advantage in shots and became the first team to post more than two goals in a game against the Cowgirls this season. OSU entered the match having given up only 15 goals in 21 contests.
