STILLWATER – It's official. Cade Cunningham, arguably the nation's best player and the top recruit in program history, signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Mike Boynton and the Oklahoma State basketball team.
The No. 1 player on the USA TODAY Chosen 25 rankings, Cunningham is currently rated by 247Sports, ESPN and Rivals as the nation's best guard and the No. 2 overall player.
The unanimous five-star talent stands to become the highest ranked player to wear an Oklahoma State uniform since recruit rankings began in 2003. He is the eighth five-star recruit to sign with Oklahoma State since 2003 and the first since two-time All-American Marcus Smart in 2012.
Cunningham was the national MVP of the 2019 Nike EYBL circuit after averaging 23.8 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 59.2 percent shooting with the Texas Titans alongside fellow OSU signee Rondel Walker.
The Most Outstanding Performer at the 2019 Pangos All-American Camp, Cunningham joined a list of former MOPs that includes James Harden, John Wall, Harrison Barnes, Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis, Ben Simmons, Doug McDermott, DeAndre Ayton, and Trae Young.
Over the summer, Cunningham joined Cowboy guard Isaac Likekele on the USA Basketball U19 National team that captured the gold medal with a perfect 7-0 record at the 2019 FIBA U19 World Championship in Heraklion, Greece. Cunningham started all seven games and averaged 11.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.4 steals a game. He even recorded 21 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in the victory over Mali in the gold medal game.
Listed at 6-7 and 215 pounds, Cunningham is currently projected by ESPN and many other sites to become the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Should that happen, Cunningham would become the highest NBA Draft pick in program history, the ninth first-round selection in the modern era (since the Draft was cut to two rounds in 1989) and OSU's third lottery pick.
Cunningham currently stars for head coach Kevin Boyle at powerhouse Montverde Academy in Florida. He was named a MaxPreps Junior All-American after averaging 11.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game last season, and even put up 26 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds in the 2019 GEICO High School Nationals semifinal against Oak Hill Academy.
Despite an injury during his sophomore season, Cunningham finished that season averaging 18.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game at Arlington's Bowie High School. He earned District 4-6A MVP honors and a Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) All-Region nod.
As a freshman, Cunningham averaged 15.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and three assists per game, helping Bowie reach the District 6A Region I final while being named District 4-6A Newcomer of the Year.
According to 247Sports, Cunningham's overall recruiting grade is fractions of a point behind both Evan Mobley for the No. 1 spot in the 2020 class and 2005 OSU signee Gerald Green for the title of top signee in program history. However, Green, the nation's unanimous No. 1 player, opted instead for the NBA prior to suiting up for Oklahoma State.
Cunningham comes from an athletic family. His father, Keith, played football at Texas Tech, and his older brother, Cannen, played basketball for Larry Brown at SMU before pursuing a coaching career. Cannen joined the Cowboy coaching staff as an assistant coach in June.
He chose the Cowboys over Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, Florida, Washington and more.
With Cunningham on board, Boynton and the Cowboys have locked in top-25 recruiting classes in back-to-back seasons.
Cowboy basketball season tickets are on sale now and start at just $150. Visit okstate.com/tickets or text/call 877-ALL-4-OSU for more information.
