In the Rankings
Oklahoma State is back in the rankings this week after being voted No. 25 in the AP poll and one spot outside of the top 25 in the coaches poll. Entering 2019, OSU had reached the top 15 of the AP poll at some point in 10 of the past 11 seasons. OSU had also seen a top 10 ranking in the AP poll at some point in eight of the past 11 seasons. It is worth noting that OSU was No. 23 in the first release of the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Although this week's rankings aren't released until Tuesday, OSU has appeared in the CFP rankings four of the past five seasons. Kansas is not ranked.
Â
The Series
Saturday's game marks the 70th meeting between Oklahoma State and Kansas, with the series dating back to 1923. The 2019 season also marks the 10th consecutive year the teams have met. OSU owns a 38-29-2 all-time series advantage, including a 16-14-1 advantage in games played in Stillwater. OSU has won nine straight games against the Jayhawks, as well as 14 of the past 15 in the series. OSU has won four straight games in Stillwater, as well as six of the past seven played at home. A win Saturday would extend the longest win streak for either team in the series. It would also give OSU 10 straight wins vs. Kansas to mark its longest active win streak against any opponent and match the second-longest win streak in OSU history against one opponent. It would only trail OSU's 11-game streak vs. Kansas State from 1947-62. The only other 10-game win streak came against Central Oklahoma from 1908-1922. Coach Mike Gundy is 10-1 in his career against Kansas, while KU coach Les Miles is 0-0 in his career against OSU. Miles coached at Oklahoma State from 2001-04, compiling a record of 28-21. Saturday's game marks the first time in Oklahoma State history that it has faced a former head coach.
Â
Oklahoma State from a Distance
Oklahoma State is 6-3 overall and 3-3 in Big 12 play. The Cowboys secured bowl eligibility for the 14th consecutive season after beating TCU last time out. The story of the season so far has been the emergence of Heisman Trophy candidate Chuba Hubbard, who leads the nation in nearly every statistical rushing category, including rushing yards, rushing yards per game, all-purpose yards, yards after contact (via Pro Football Focus), yards per carry (min. 170) and more. His average of 178.6 rushing yards per game is 33.1 more than second-place A.J. Dillon of Boston College. For perspective, the spread between first place and second place is greater than the difference between second-place Dillon and the nation's 12th-place rusher. Hubbard's rushing yards through nine games are better than three of the past four running backs to win the Heisman Trophy and his yards per carry is better than all four. Defensively, the Cowboys have put together back-to-back winning performances, forcing seven turnovers in the past two weeks alone. Kolby Harvell-Peel has put together a convincing résumé to earn first-team all-conference honors at safety, ranking No. 6 in the FBS in passes defended. He forced three turnovers in the win over TCU.
