STILLWATER– The Oklahoma State women's tennis team makes history Saturday when it plays the first NCAA tennis match outside the United States. The Cowgirls square off with returning NCAA semifinalist Duke in the dual.
"It's really important for us to be the first college match played outside the U.S.," said coach Chris Young. "This is a really special match. I think a lot of things came together, and for us to be invited and selected for this says a lot about our program."
OSU returns three experienced seniors in Sofia Blanco, Marina Guinart and Katie Stresnakova. Of the three, Stresnakova received the highest ITA singles ranking at No. 21. Guinart comes in at No. 40, and Blanco enters the spring slate ranked No. 73. Blanco is also ranked twice in doubles rankings.
In addition, the Cowgirls added two players to the roster over winter break in Tamara Arnold and Bunyawi Thamchaiwat. Freshman Catherine Gulihur and transfer Lisa Marie Rioux are also making the trip to Nassau. Rioux and Blanco come in at No. 18 in doubles, with Gulihur and Blanco entering the season at No. 28.
"Going on a trip with these new girls will be good, but you also like it for your seniors … the kids who have really paid their dues in our program," Young said. "They get to start their senior year in a pretty special environment."
The No. 4 Blue Devils field two top-ten singles players in No. 8 Maria Mateas and No. 10 Meible Chi. and four total ranked individuals.
The Cowgirls take the court at 3:00 p.m. CT on Saturday afternoon. Fans can follow along with @CowgirlTennis on Twitter.
