Complete Notes
The Basics
The Oklahoma State football team (3-1 overall; 0-1 Big 12) visits Kansas (2-2 overall; 0-1 Big 12) Saturday at 11 a.m. in what marks OSU's first road game of the 2018 season. The Cowboys carry with them a six-game road win streak that dates back to last season.
On the Air
The game will be televised by FSN with Mark Followill, Brian Baldinger and Lesley McCaslin on the call. The contest will also be carried live on the Cowboy Radio Network, with Dave Hunziker handling play-by-play, John Holcomb providing analysis and Robert Allen reporting from the sideline. Fans outside of the Cowboy Radio Network can listen to the OSU broadcast for free through TuneIn Radio or the TuneIn Radio app.
In the Rankings
The Cowboys are ranked No. 21 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and are also receiving votes in the Associated Press Poll. OSU reached a season-high of No. 15 in both polls during week four and has now been ranked in the top 15 of the A.P. poll at some point in 10 of the past 11 seasons. Oklahoma State has now been ranked in the top 25 of at least one of those polls since week 10 of the 2016 season. The Cowboys are also one of only five teams to be ranked in every set of College Football Playoff rankings since the beginning of 2015, joining Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma and Ohio State. Kansas is not ranked in the A.P. or the coaches poll this week.
The Series
Saturday's game marks the 69th meeting between Oklahoma State and Kansas. OSU holds a 37-29-2 all-time advantage in the series and a 21-15-1 advantage in Lawrence. The Cowboys have won eight consecutive meetings, and a win Saturday would tie OSU's longest active win streak against a single opponent, matching the current nine-win streak vs. Louisiana. OSU has also won 13 of the past 14 overall games vs. KU and seven straight games played in Lawrence. OSU has not lost to KU since 2007, and it has not lost to KU in Lawrence since 1994. Mike Gundy is 9-1 in his career against the Jayhawks, while KU coach David Beaty is 0-3 in his career against the Cowboys. Oklahoma State won last year's meeting in Stillwater, 58-17, and won the last meeting at Kansas, 44-20, in 2016.
Oklahoma State From a Distance
Oklahoma State is 3-1 after seeing its nine-game win streak vs. Texas Tech come to an end last week in the Big 12 opener. The loss also ended a five-game win streak for the team that dated back to last season. The Cowboys are led offensively by junior running back Justice Hill, sophomore receiver Tylan Wallace and senior quarterback Taylor Cornelius. A Doak Walker Award candidate, Hill enters week five ranked fourth nationally with 8.43 yards per carry on the season and needs just three yards to become the ninth Cowboy in history to hit 3,000 career rushing yards. He also has a chance to tie a Big 12 record Saturday at 11 straight games with a rushing touchdown if he can find the end zone on the ground vs. the Jayhawks. His five rushing scores on the season rank 12th nationally and his 388 rushing yards are the most in the league. Wallace cemented his own mark on history over the past three weeks as he became just the third OSU underclassman to record three consecutive 100-yard receiving games, joining Biletnikoff winners James Washington and Justin Blackmon. He ranks No. 6 nationally at 110.5 yards per game and No. 8 with 442 total receiving yards. All of those receptions were delivered by Cornelius, who ranks No. 8 in FBS with 1,229 passing yards on the season, No. 14 nationally with 325 yards of total offense per game and No. 17 nationally at 14.81 yards per completion. Defensively, the Cowboys lead the nation in sacks per game averaging 4.75 per contest and rank No. 5 nationally with 9.5 tackles for loss per game. Defensive end Jordan Brailford has led the way with 4.0 sacks on the season to lead the conference and rank among the top 15 nationally. OSU's linebackers have led the way in tackles, as Calvin Bundage has 30 on the year and Justin Phillips has 24 through the first four games. OSU's efforts on the defensive front have placed the Cowboys No. 1 in the league when it comes to rushing defense, allowing just 111.5 yards per game.
