Cowboys Earn Fifth-Straight NCAA Bid
May 01, 2018 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's men's tennis team was selected to play in the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive year, as the Cowboys will travel to the regional hosted by No. 10 Southern California in Los Angeles it was announced on Tuesday's NCAA Tournament bracket reveal.
Tuesday's announcement marks Oklahoma State's fifth-straight bid to compete in the NCAA Tournament. That streak is the second longest in program history, trailing only a seven-year stretch from 2003-09 that saw the Cowboys advance to the Round of 16 on three occasions.
"So it looks like we're 17 in the country which means we missed hosting by just one spot," coach Jay Udwadia said. "We kind of knew that coming in. It won't change our mentality we still have to get through the first and second rounds and be ready to go."
Joining Oklahoma State in Los Angeles for the regional will be UC Santa Barbara, host No. 10 USC and OSU's first-round opponent, Harvard.
The first and second rounds of the 2017 NCAA Tournament will begin next Saturday, May 12. The winners of Friday's matches will then face each other on Sunday with a spot in the round of 16 on the line. In 2016, Oklahoma State blanked both Bryant and No. 19 Arkansas, 4-0, to secure its first trip to the Round of 16 since 2008.
OSU enters this year's event with a 14-7 record all-time in first-round matchups, which includes a 4-0 mark during head coach Jay Udwadia's tenure. The Cowboys are 1-3 during second-round contests under Udwadia, with the lone win coming over the Razorbacks in Stillwater two seasons ago.
"We'll be ready to go full force," Udwadia said. "We had great practices this afternoon for conditioning. We've got a night practice tonight so I think everyone will be ready to go and be excited to play in the first round."
