Veteran Grad Transfer Guard Cunningham Signs With Cowboy Basketball

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton has announced the signing of graduate transfer guard Mike Cunningham (6-0, 185, Gr., G, Washington D.C., USC-Upstate).
A veteran of 96 games over the last three seasons at USC Upstate, Cunningham piled up 1,227 career points and 281 career assists in his time with the Spartans. He is expected to earn his bachelor's degree this spring from USC Upstate and be immediately eligible for the Cowboys.
"It's a great day for Cowboy Basketball as we welcome Mike Cunningham to join our program," Boynton said. "Mike has proven to be a consistent contributor in his time in college basketball. Mike has overcome a lot in his life to become a polished basketball player, and he has a great sense of awareness and maturity. He has been coached well and is a student of the game and his experience will be a great asset to our team next season."
Cunningham will enter Gallagher-Iba Arena with 65 career double-digit scoring games and 14 20-point performances. The Washington D.C. native has hit 215 career 3-pointers at a clip of 37.3 percent, and is a career 77.9 percent (180-of-231) shooter at the free throw line.
As a redshirt-junior last season, Cunningham averaged 13.7 points and 3.0 assists per game while leading the Spartan regulars with a 38.2 percent mark from 3-point. He knocked down a team-high 86 shots from deep, ranked fifth in the ASUN with a 2.2 assist/turnover ratio and also ranked third in the conference with a team-high 33.5 minutes per game.
"Mike can play both guard positions because of his natural instincts," Boynton said. "He can create his own shot and has very good court vision. He is a really good shooter, an explosive athlete and possesses a high level feel for the game. We look forward to getting him in a Cowboy uniform and having him help to build on our foundation."
In 2016-17, Cunningham ranked 11th or better in the ASUN in scoring (13.4 ppg), minutes played (31.7 mpg), 3-point field goal percentage (38.5), free throw percentage (81.9), assists per game (3.1 apg), assist/turnover ratio (2.1 a/to) and steals per game (1.3 spg).
After redshirting the 2014-15 season, Cunningham ranked third on the team in scoring at 9.8 points per game, while also contributing 2.6 rebounds per contest and 85 total assists in 2015-16.
Cunningham played his high school ball at DuVal High School in Lanham, Maryland, where he was a Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention and a Prince George's County All-Gazette Second Team selection.
Cunningham joins a Cowboy basketball recruiting class that includes Kentrevious Jones (6-10, 290, F/C, Macon, Ga.), Duncan Demuth (6-8, 215, F, Seminole, Fla.) and Yor Anei (6-10, 220, F, Lee's Summit, Mo.).
