Cowgirls Tally Sixth-Straight Bedlam Win in Sweep of Oklahoma
March 31, 2018 | Cowgirl Tennis
NORMAN, Okla. – The 13th-ranked Oklahoma State women's tennis team won its sixth-straight Bedlam contest on Saturday afternoon, sweeping No. 44 Oklahoma, 4-0, at the Headington Family Tennis Center. With the win, OSU pushed its all-time series record against the Sooners to 38-19.
Â
The Cowgirls (14-2, 4-1 Big 12) were simply too much for the Sooners to handle on Saturday, not dropping a set in singles or doubles on the way to their fourth sweep of the season.
Â
"I thought today was great," head coach Chris Young said. "Anytime you can play against your rival and not lose a set in singles or doubles, it says a lot about the girls' focus. This team competes so hard and when it comes down to it, the girls are very confident in what they're able to do. They just compete so well and they make it tough to win points against them.
Â
"I was really proud of the mindset. The girls came in here with the expectation to not only win, but to win convincingly and I thought we did that."
Â
Although the match was in Norman, the victory came in front of a largely orange contingent.
Â
"I want to give credit to our fans for coming down here, taking over here today and giving us what we're used to at home," Young said. "Our fans are great and that's a big advantage we have here at Oklahoma State."
Â
OSU opened the day by taking the doubles point with wins on the front two courts, moving their record this season when taking doubles to a perfect 10-0. Sofia Blanco and Vladica Babic struck first with a 6-3 victory over Oklahoma's Christiana Brigante and Jasmine Asghar on court one for their sixth-straight win and 20th as a tandem this season.
Â
Marina Guinart and Katarina Stresnakova won their second match of the weekend in a 6-4 match to clinch the doubles point and put OSU ahead, 1-0, to start the afternoon.
Â
The Cowgirls came out swinging in singles, winning all six first sets before tallying straight-set victories on courts one, two and four to lock up the match.
Â
Guinart got the scoring started in singles, getting off the court quickly in a 6-1, 6-0 drubbing of Oklahoma's Simran Kaur Sethi on court four to stretch her undefeated dual record this season to 10-0.
Â
Vladica Babic remained undefeated on the weekend with an impressive, 6-2, 6-2, win over No. 28 Lily Miyazaki in the top singles position. The Cowgirl senior is now 21-6 overall on the season, with seven of those wins coming over nationally ranked opponents. She has won five of her last six matches in the No. 1 singles spot.
Â
Senior Megan McCray came through for the Cowgirls with the 6-3, 6-4 match clincher over Oklahoma's Jasmine Asghar on court two to move her record this spring to 11-1. Her seventh-straight win, it marked her fifth match-clinching win of the season.
Â
The Cowgirls will be back in action next weekend when they return home to host another in-state rival in No. 27 Tulsa. That match will be Friday at 6 p.m. at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
