February 07, 2018 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team moved up two spots in the latest edition of the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Men's Division I Rankings, which were released today. The team now comes in at No. 9. Wednesday's rankings mark the 36th consecutive week that the Cowboys have been ranked inside the top-25 of the ITA rankings, which is the longest such streak during head coach Jay Udwadia's tenure.
OSU's rise in the rankings comes as the Cowboys took down No. 20 Tulane last week, 4-3.
This week's ITA rankings also included updated singles and doubles rankings. Four Cowboys found themselves in the newly released singles rankings including Mathieu Scaglia (No. 55), Julian Cash (No. 88), Artur Dubinski (No. 94) and Luke Hammond (No. 125).
Scaglia came in at No. 55 after previously holding the No. 93 spot. Scaglia has racked up 16 singles wins this season and was recently named Big 12 Player of the Week after defeating two ranked opponents this past weekend. Scaglia went undefeated at the Silverado Resort and Spa's College Invitational to help the team win the tournament to kick off the season. He then fought his way through the pre-qualifying round of the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships to reach the qualifying round where he won in the first round but fell in the second round to No. 37 ranked Leo Telles of Big 12 foe Texas. Scaglia also found success at the ITA Central Regional with his only other loss of the season coming from No. 17 Ferran Calvo of Oklahoma in the round of 32.
Cash comes in at No. 88 after previously being unranked. The senior, primarily playing the No. 1 singles spot for the Cowboys, posts a 7-3 record on the season and is 2-2 against nationally ranked opponents in singles. Cash has also collected an impressive 45 career singles wins as a Cowboy.
Dubinski earns his first career ITA singles rankings at No. 94. The 2017 Big 12 Newcomer of the year plays primarily at the No. 2 spot for the Cowboys and has compiled an 8-4 record this season. The junior is 2-0 against nationally ranked opponents. The junior has complied 18 career singles wins after just one calendar year at OSU.
Hammond rounds out the updated singles rankings coming in at No. 125. The freshman has a 13-3 record in his first season as a Cowboy and is 5-1 in dual season so far. The England native primarily plays at the No. 6 spot for the Cowboys.
Cash and Maxim Tybar came in a No. 39 in doubles rankings. The tandem recorded a win at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships against Louisville's then ranked No. 6 ranked Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Parker Wynn. The Cowboy duo had a quality loss in the second round of the main draw to the No. 3 ranked William Blumberg and Robert Kelly of North Carolina.
In addition to being ranked No. 9 by the ITA, the Cowboys we're also ranked No. 10 by the USTA, today. This is the USTA rankings' second season with an expanded voter panel, after a year in which the Virginia men and Florida women each began the year at No. 1 and finished 2017 as NCAA Champions.
The Cowboys' spring season is set to continue this weekend as OSU hosts Northwestern on Friday and No. 1 Wake Forest at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center at 5 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
