Cowgirls Welcome Four Special Guests For Play4Kay Contest
February 03, 2018 | Cowgirl Basketball
STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State's women's basketball team will honor four cancer survivors on Saturday as part of its Play4Kay contest against Kansas at 7:30 p.m. The Cowgirls, who will wear pink-themed uniforms, shoes and accessories, will host Mary Gade, Gina Noble, Janie Elledge and Lisbeth DeLong inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
In addition to being recognized pregame, all four honorary Cowgirls will shoot baskets for one minute to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness.
Gade has been on the faculty at OSU as an economics professor for 31 years. She is married to David, an OSU PhD in environmental science, for almost 37 years. They have two children: Emma, and Noah, a current member of the OSU cross country and track team. Mary was surprised when diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in October 2004, at the age of 45, with no family history of cancer and a healthy lifestyle. She went through four rounds of chemotherapy followed by six weeks of radiation. She has been cancer free for 13 years.
Noble, the mayor of Stillwater and an OSU professor in the School of Media & Strategic Communications, is also an alumna who earned two degrees from OSU. In the summer of 2016, Stillwater Medical Center asked her to promote its new 3D Mammography. She found out that day that she had DCIS – Ductal carcinoma in situ - the earliest stage of breast cancer. Noble had a double mastectomy in August 2016, and a reconstructive surgery in February of 2017. She is one-year cancer free, and it's been almost one year since her last surgery.
Elledge is a 1986 OSU graduate and a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. ?She and her husband, Monty, have been married 28 years and have three children; Megan, Jordan, and Parker. Janie was diagnosed with infiltrating ductal carcenoma in 2008, at age 45. After two surgeries, nine chemo treatments, and 35 radiation treatments she is thankful to say she will be 10 years cancer free in September of this year.
DeLong is a 1968 OSU graduate, a member of Delta Delta Delta and an enthusiastic supporter of OSU basketball. In June, 2006, at age 60 Lisbeth was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a lumpectomy, chemotherapy and radiation. She and Charles will celebrate 50 years of marriage in June. She has been cancer free for 12 and a half years.
OSU's CvC program was started by legendary head coach Eddie Sutton and ranks first in the Big 12, first in the high plains division and in the top 10 nationally.
