February 26, 2018 | Cowboy Basketball
The Cowboys face their final road test of the season on Tuesday when they travel to Ames, Iowa, to take on Iowa State. You can catch the game at 6 p.m. on ESPNU, watchespn.com or you can tune in on the Cowboy Radio Network.
Keeping It Clean
Iowa State doesn't give the ball up easily. The Cyclones are No. 50 in the nation in fewest turnovers per game and ranked 28th in the country in fewest turnovers so far this season. Even when opponents have their chances on offense, the Cyclones are one of the country's best at playing clean defense. They are No. 75 in the nation in personal fouls per game and 39th-best at limiting fouls this season nationwide.
Patrolling the Perimeter
The Cyclones rely on their 3-point shooting to put up points. They are fourth-best in the conference at knocking down shots from downtown. Iowa State shoots at a 36.1 percent clip from triple territory. The Cyclones are 6-1 this season when they make 10 or more 3-point baskets. On the defensive end, the Cyclones once again perform well at the 3-point line. Iowa State limits its opponents to 34.4 percent from distance this season.
Hilton Magic
The Cyclones have been a feisty team to play in Ames, Iowa. This season alone, they have won four home conference games this season with wins against No. 8 Texas Tech, No. 15 West Virginia and No. 17 Oklahoma. This success is not new, though. In their past 38 home conference games, Iowa State boasts a 29-11 record. Under current head coach Steve Prohm, Iowa State has a 35-11 record at Hilton Coliseum.
Dominating Down Low
Cameron Lard is one of Iowa State's best players. The 6-9 forward out of Natchitoches, Louisiana, is third on the team in scoring with 13.1 points per game, and he leads the Cyclones in rebounding, grabbing an average of 8.2 boards per game. Lard also leads the team in double-doubles with eight on the season with his most recent coming against Kansas on Jan. 9. He is No. 10 in the country at knocking down shots, shooting 63.1 percent from the floor.
Head Coach Steve Prohm
Steve Prohm is in his third season as the head coach of the Cyclones. He has racked up a 60-38 record in his time as the head coach at Iowa State. He led Iowa State to its second ever victory over a No. 1 team when it beat Oklahoma in the 2015-16 season. Before he was at Iowa State, Prohm served as the head man at Murray State, where he led the team to an NCAA tournament appearance in 2011-12 and a perfect 16-0 conference regular season in 2014-15. Prohm graduated from Alabama in 1997.
