Cowgirl Tennis Sweeps Tigers for Fourth-Straight Win
February 18, 2018 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – The 12th-ranked Oklahoma State women's tennis team shut out Pacific, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Greenwood Tennis Center to pick up its fourth consecutive victory.
Â
The Cowgirls (8-1) wrapped up the match in just over an hour and a half, taking the doubles point and first sets on all six singles courts before closing out the Tigers thanks to straight-set wins from Megan McCray, Katie Stresnakova and Sofia Blanco.
Â
"I thought it was good," head coach Chris Young said. "It was a match for us that we just needed to come out here and try to get better. Right now, with every match we're just trying to get better."
Â
OSU claimed the doubles point for the second-straight match on Sunday, getting wins from its top two tandems to take an early 1-0 lead. Stresnakova and junior Marina Guinart picked up the first victory of the day for the Cowgirls in a 6-0 shutout of Pacific's Mayaan Sela and Sabrina Rodriguez on court two.
Â
McCray and Vladica Babic clinched the point for the Pokes in a 6-3 tally over Karina Vyrlan and Anneroos Nederstigt on one. The win was Babic's 98th career doubles win, putting her only two away from being the eighth player in program history to reach that mark and the first since Linda Faltynkova in 2003.
Â
"After yesterday with a good doubles performance we wanted to come out and get better in doubles, and I thought all across the board we played pretty well," Young saod. "I think that's what we've wanted, to have three good performances, and today was pretty solid with that."
Â
The Cowgirls carried their momentum into singles play to quickly secure their eighth win of the year.
Â
Stresnakova stretched the OSU lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Dohee Lee on court three. Remaining undefeated with two wins this weekend, Stresnakova has won eight matches this spring and in the process has come up with victories in 18-straight sets dating back to last month.
Â
"I think I'm just confident," Stresnakova said. "I was practicing a lot. I know what I'm doing and I know that I can win. I don't think I played that well today, but I know how to manage the points and games, and how to win."
Â
Shortly after Stresnakova closed out her match at No. 3, McCray locked up a 6-1, 6-1 tally over Karina Vyrlan on court two for her second of the weekend in singles. With her win, the Cowgirl senior stretches her record to 7-1 this season.
Â
"I think I'm playing pretty well right now," McCray said. "There's a lot of room for improvement, and we have some time to do that in between now and our next match so that's what I want to do."
Â
Sofia Blanco clinched the win for the Cowgirls on court five with a dominant, 6-0, 6-2 victory over Sabrina Rodriguez. Blanco pushed her win total on the season to 10, which includes four dual victories.
Â
With their next match set for March 14 at No. 10 UCLA, the Cowgirls will enjoy a few weeks off from collegiate competition and set their sights on the Orlando $25k ITF event set for March 4-10 in Lake Nona, Fla.
