Oklahoma State Game Notes
• The Basics
Oklahoma State earned a third-place finish at the AdvoCare Invitational thanks to a 90-77 win over No. 19/21 LSU on Sunday, and has now won five of its last six matchups against ranked opponents. Cameron McGriff, who posted a career-high 28 points in the win over LSU and a double-double in the Memphis victory, was named to the AdvoCare Invitational All-Tournament team. Now the Cowboys turn their attention North to the U.S. Bank Stadium Classic in Minneapolis, where they will face Minnesota. This will be the 10th time in program history that OSU will have played in a stadium venue, but the first time since the 2004 Final Four. The Cowboys are meeting Minnesota for the first time since a thriller in 2015. The Golden Gophers are led by one of the country's best forwards in Jordan Murphy, who is averaging 14.3 points, 12.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists - all team highs.
• On The Air
The matchup between the Cowboys and Golden Gophers will air on the Big Ten Network at 9 p.m. Central. Cory Provus and Shon Morris will handle the on-air duties. The webcast is available at BTN2Go.com or the BTN2Go app. Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb will have the Cowboy Radio Network call, which can also be heard on the TuneIn app or on XM Radio channel 382.
• Poll Attacks
The Cowboys have won five of their last six games against ranked opponents, which is something only seven other teams can claim. OSU joins Virginia (6-0), Arkansas (5-1), Kansas (5-1), Michigan (5-1), St. Bonaventure (5-1), Villanova (5-1) and Virginia Tech (5-1).
• Cam Is The Man
With averages of 16.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, Cameron McGriff is one of just two Big 12 players (joining Dedric Lawson of Kansas) averaging those figures. The junior captain was named to the AdvoCare Invitational All-Tournament team after a career-high 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting in the win over No. 19/21 LSU. In the win over Memphis, McGriff recorded his second double-double with 11 points and 12 boards. McGriff is currently doubling his scoring average from 2017-18 (8.4 to 16.8 ppg).
• Yor Kidding Me
Yor Anei has proven to be a natural shot-blocker. The 6-10 freshman with the 7'0 1/2" wing span blocked six shots in the win over Memphis, which set a new AdvoCare Invitational record, tied for the most ever by an OSU freshman and are the most by any Cowboy since Andre Williams in 2003. Anei is tied for the Big 12 lead with 2.5 blocks per game, which ranks 22nd nationally. Anei has exactly half of OSU's 30 team blocks, and if Anei was a team by himself he would rank 267th in the NCAA in blocks.
• Dizzy-ing Pace
Thomas Dziagwa, nicknamed "Dizzy" by his teammates, is proving that a summer challenge from head coach Mike Boynton is paying off. Boynton challenged Dziagwa to make 25,000 3-pointers on his own time. He not only topped that goal but almost reached 26,000. So, no one in the Cowboy locker room is shocked that Dziagwa ranks ninth nationally with a 59.5 percent clip from 3-point. His 3.67 makes per game is tied for 23rd nationally, and KenPom ranks Dziagwa fourth nationally in "true shooting percentage". Dziagwa is 28th among all active players with a 42.4 career 3-point mark.
• The Series With The Gophers
This will be the seventh meeting between the Golden Gophers and the Cowboys, and the series is tied at three wins apiece. The two squads played a thriller in Sioux Falls in 2015, which was the first meeting since 1986. All three of Minnesota's wins in the series have come in Minneapolis, while OSU took the two meetings in Stillwater. The Gophers and Cowboys will play again next season at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla.
• Minnesota Snapshot
The Golden Gophers are off to a fast start under sixth-year head coach Richard Pitino, who was named the 2017 Big Ten Coach of the Year for leading Minnesota to a school-record 23-regular season wins and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. All-Big Ten selection Jordan Murphy is averaging a double-double with 14.3 points and 12.2 rebounds per game.
• No Room To Roam In The Dome
The Cowboys are facing the Gophers at U.S. Bank Stadium, which is the home of the NFL's Minnesota Vikings. This will be the 10th time OSU has played in a football stadium setting, but it's the first time since the 2004 NCAA Final Four, when the Cowboys took on Georgia Tech in the Alamodome. OSU has also played at the Kingdome in Seattle (1995), the Hoosier/RCA Dome in Indianapolis (twice in 1993, twice in 1999) and the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York (1986, twice in 2000). In all, OSU is 3-6 in these venues, although most of the games occurred during deep NCAA Tournament runs.
