Cowboy Tennis Picked Fourth in Big 12 Preseason Poll
January 05, 2018 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team was picked fourth in the 2018 Big 12 preseason coaches poll released by the conference on Friday.
The Cowboys received 12 points to land in the fourth spot of the poll behind TCU and Texas tied for first with 23 points and Baylor with 14. Oklahoma (9) and Texas Tech (9) round out the rankings tied for fifth.
OSU is coming off an appearance in the semi-finals of the Big 12 Championship in 2017, and a 3-2 conference record. The Pokes went 22-7 overall on the year and were chosen to host an NCAA regional for the second-straight season.
Head coach Jay Udwadia returns a handful of players from last season's run, most notably senior Julian Cash, who is coming off an impressive 2016-2017 season earning All-American and All-Big 12 honors as well as being the first Cowboy to crack the top-20 ITA singles rankings since 2010. Also returning are seniors Tristan Meraut and Jurence Mendoza, Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Artur Dubinski and sophomore Mathieu Scaglia who comes in ranked No. 93 in singles by the ITA. Iowa transfer Eleftherios Theodorou, along with freshmen Luke Hammond, Brady Draheim and Maxim Tybar, also joined the team this fall.
The Cowboys will open the 2018 season ranked No. 15 in the country by the ITA. The preseason poll released earlier this week features all Big 12 men's teams in the top 25.
OSU will serve up the 2018 season with a doubleheader against Bryant and Lamar on Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. respectively.
