STILLWATER – Cowboy Tennis senior, Jurence Mendoza was named to the Philippines' Davis Cup team and will play for his native country in the, "World Cup of Tennis." Mendoza only the second Cowboy tennis player to be named to their country's Davis Cup team. The other Cowboys who have played in the Davis Cup was three-time All-American, Oleksandr Nedovyesov for Kazakhstan in 2015 and Matt Prentice for New Zealand in 2004.
Mendoza was one of the five players nominated to the team along with Francis Casey Alcantara, Alberto Lim, Jeson Patrombom and John Bryan Decasa Otico. Mendoza is the only player on the Philippines' team that brings United States college tennis experience to the lineup. The senior has made great contributions to the Oklahoma State tennis program compiling 60 career doubles wins and 46 singles wins. Mendoza, primarily playing in the No. 5 singles spot, defeated his two most recent opponents in straight sets in dominating fashion. His 60 career doubles wins are enough to tie him for the eighth spot for program career doubles wins.
Philippines was Eastern Zone champion in 1957, 1958, 1960 and 1964, but lost in the Inter Zonal semifinals on all four occasions. Philippines reached the World Group play-offs in 1991, although has never appeared in the competition's top tier.
The Philippines' team will begin play February 2-4, against Indonesia at the Gelora Bung Karno Tennis Stadium Complex in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Philippines has faced Indonesia on 11 occasions, 6 of these in favor of Indonesia.
