Oklahoma State Game Notes
The Basics
The "Cardiac Cowboys" did it again. For the third straight home contest, Oklahoma State used late-game heroics to overcome a deficit and win. This time, Kendall Smith went coast-to-coast for a 3-pointer to force overtime against No. 4 Oklahoma. In OT, the Cowboys forced Trae Young into 1-of-7 shooting and made the plays to win the 235th Bedlam showdown, 83-81. Now, the Cowboys turn their attention to a talented Texas Tech squad that is ranked No. 18 in both polls, is 12-0 at home and ranks fourth nationally in defensive efficiency according to KenPom.com.
On the Air
The matchup between the Cowboys and Red Raiders will air Tuesday on ESPNews at 6 p.m. Central. Clay Matvick and Tim Welsh will handle the on-air duties. ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN app will carry the webcast. As always, Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb will have the Cowboy Radio Network call.
Cowboy Quick Hitters
• In support of Coaches vs Cancer Suits and Sneakers week Mike Boynton and the Cowboy coaching staff will wear sneakers during Tuesday's game at Texas Tech. The NABC initiative supports the American Cancer Society and their fight against the dreaded disease.
• Tavarius Shine only gets better as the competition level improves. Against OSU's five ranked opponents, Shine has averaged a team-best 14.8 points on 50.8 percent shooting.
• Jeffrey Carroll is racing up the program's career scoring charts. The senior now has 1,168 career points, which ranks 29th in OSU history and third among all Big 12 players behind only Jevon Carter (1,440) and Devonte Graham (1,419).
• OSU ranks 15th nationally in free throw percentage with a clip of 77.4 percent. Every Cowboy with at least 20 attempts on the year is shooting 73 percent or better from the stripe.
"Cardiac Cowboys" Strike Again
The "Cardiac Cowboys" have made late-game heroics the norm. Oklahoma State has won its last three home games in overtime or on the final shot of regulation. Kendall Smith hit shots to force an extra frame against both Iowa State (OSU trailed by 8 with 3:32 to play) and No. 4 Oklahoma (OSU trailed by 5 with 2:11 to play), while Tavarius Shine's tip-in with 6 seconds to play proved the game winner against Texas (OSU trailed by 12 with 5:55 to play). In all, OSU has won five games decided by two possessions or in overtime, including its two wins over ranked opponents.
The Series With Texas Tech
The Cowboys won both meetings with the Red Raiders last season to increase their lead in the overall series to 43-19. Last season's win in Lubbock ended a three game losing streak to the Red Raiders in United Supermarkets Arena and cut the TTU lead in the series in Lubbock to 12-10.Â
Leading The Red Raiders
The Red Raiders are under the direction of second-year head coach Chris Beard, who was the architect of Little Rock's magical 30-win season that included a first round NCAA Tournament double-overtime upset over Purdue, 85-83, in 2016. Beard is no stranger to Lubbock, or the state of Texas for that matter. Originally from The Woodlands, and a 1995 graduate of the University of Texas, Beard spent time on the coaching staffs at Texas, Incarnate Word, Abilene Christian and North Texas before joining Bob Knight at Texas Tech in 2001. He remained on staff in Lubbock through 2011 before getting head coaching gigs with the South Carolina Warriors (semi-pro), Angelo State and Little Rock.
Suttons Well Represented
Former Cowboy player (1990-92), assistant coach (1993-06) and head coach (2006-08) Sean Sutton joined the Texas Tech staff as an advisor to head coach Chris Beard. In 15 seasons in all capacities in Stillwater the Cowboys racked up 11 seasons of 20 or more wins during Sutton's time, including a 39-29 mark as the OSU head coach. Sutton spent the past six seasons with his brother, Scott Sutton, at Oral Roberts. Scott joined Mike Boynton's coaching staff prior to the season.
Red Raider Defense
Texas Tech has a stellar 5-1 record against AP top-25 opponents, including a pair of top-10 victories, thanks to a stingy defense. The Red Raiders rank fifth nationally with a scoring defense that allows just 61.6 points per game. They're holding their opponents to a 38.8 shooting percentage, which ranks 12th nationally. Kenpom ranks the Red Raiders fourth nationally in defensive efficiency and eighth in turnover percentage at 23.7.
Against Ranked Opponents
The Cowboys have won two games against ranked foes this season, and now have 118 all-time victories over top-25 opponents, including 50 wins over top-10 teams. The Cowboys took down No. 19 Florida State, 71-70, on Dec. 16 in Sunrise, Fla., and are coming off a thrilling overtime win over No. 4 Oklahoma, 83-81, on Saturday. The last time OSU defeated ranked opponents The Cowboys are 3-2 all-time when facing ranked Texas Tech teams.
