LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team opened play Friday at the Freeman Memorial Tennis Classic. Both Cowgirl doubles teams will compete in the round of 16 on Saturday, while senior Vladica Babic will play in the quarterfinals.
Â
The day opened with a perfect start in doubles, with both Cowgirl tandems advancing to the main draw round of 16.
Â
Matched up with Izumi Asano and Juliet Zhang of UNLV in their first-round match, Marina Guinart and Katarina Stresnakova took care of business with a 6-1 victory. Meanwhile, the 20th-ranked tandem of Vladica Babic and Sofia Blanco advanced as well with a 6-3 win over North Carolina's Maggie Kane and Cassandra Vasquez.
Â
Babic opened singles on a high note for the Cowgirls, dropping Florida's Peggy Porter, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of 32 for her first win of the spring. Babic followed up the win with another in the round of 16. Thanks to a dominant, 6-1 win in the third set, the senior defeated Stanford's Kimberly Yee to advance to the quarters.
Â
Stresnakova tallied a nice win to open her day in singles, dropping No. 57 Laura Gulbe, 7-6(2), 7-5, in the first round. The Cowgirl junior fell short of a quarterfinal berth in the following round, giving up a 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 match to Florida's Victoria Emma.
Â
Matched up with Maggie Kane of North Carolina for her first singles bout of the weekend, Sofia Blanco was able to run away with the match in a 6-0 second set that followed a 7-4 tiebreaker to decide the first. Blanco would fall in the round of 16, however, dropping a 6-3, 7-5 match to No. 46 Abi Altick of UCLA.
Â
Guinart came up short, 6-3, 6-4, in her first-round match to Stanford's No. 69 Caroline Lampl. She faced another tough loss in consolation action, falling in a 12-10 super tiebreaker to No. 32 Petra Granic of Texas.
Â
The Cowgirls will continue action in Las Vegas on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT beginning with round of 16 doubles followed by two rounds of singles.
