STILLWATER – Oklahoma State tennis' Maxim Tybar and Luke Hammond earned their first career singles and doubles wins on Friday as the Cowboys opened up their fall season at the Silverado Resort & Spa's College Invitational.
Hammond and Tybar, both freshmen at OSU this season, opened their first collegiate event with an 8-5 triumph over Ruben Alberts and Evaldo Neto of UNLV in doubles action.
In singles, Tybar split sets with South Florida's Johan Joenhagen, but rallied to secure the first victory of his OSU career in a three-set thriller, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. The Minsk, Belarus, native joins the Cowboys this season after being ranked No. 1048 in the Association of Tennis Professionals World Tour Rankings and winning 20 singles contests as a junior competitor.
Meanwhile, Hammond won his first singles match as a Cowboy in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, against USF's Ryan Marker. The Englishman joins the Cowboys this season after finding plenty of success on the international scene, as he boasts 95 career wins on the ITF Juniors circuit.
OSU picked up one other win in singles action Friday as sophomore Mathieu Scaglia knocked off USF's Oliver Poysti, 6-4, 6-3. Scaglia went 3-0 in Napa last year as a freshman and figures to play a key role for the Cowboys this season after posting a 6-3 record in singles action last year.
The Cowboys' third freshman competing in California this week, Brady Draheim, lost a hard-fought match to South Florida's Paul Giraud in three sets during his collegiate debut. Scaglia and Draheim also came up just short in doubles play Friday, as the Cowboy tandem lost in a back-and-forth tiebreak against UNLV's Richard Solberg and Courtney Lock, 8-7 (5).
OSU will be back in action on Saturday with the second round of matches slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. PT.
