September 07, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's men's tennis team opens its 2017 fall season in Napa, California, at the sixth annual Silverado Resort & Spa College Invitational this weekend.
The Cowboys will be represented at the event by Mathieu Scaglia, Luke Hammond, Brady Draheim and Max Tybar.
Scaglia made the trip to Napa last season where he made his debut as a Cowboy and won three consecutive matches to help OSU collect five team wins.
For Hammond, Draheim and Tybar, the tournament marks their OSU debuts. Hammond, an England native, joins the Cowboys after finding success internationally boasts 95 career wins on the ITF Juniors circuit and advancing to the second round of the main draw during this year's Junior Wimbledon Championships. Draheim, a Kansas native, competed in several ITA Juniors events prior to his arrival at Oklahoma State. In those events, the right-hander posted an .857 winning percentage in singles. Tybar, a Belarus native, collected double-digit wins while competing on the ITF Futures Tour.
Along with the Cowboys, this year's field includes players from Cal, Dartmouth, Hawaii, San Diego, UNLV and San Francisco.
The tournament will be spread across three days of competition. Beginning Friday, play each day will start at 9 a.m. PT with a doubles pro set to eight games and singles following.
The 2016-17 season saw the Oklahoma State program, led by head coach Jay Udwadia, continue its ascent toward the upper echelon of college tennis. Facing one of the nation's toughest schedules, OSU knocked off 11 ranked foes en route to posting an Udwadia era-best 22-7 record for the season. Among those 11 ranked victories, eight of them came against top-25 foes, including four against top-10 competition.
The Cowboys finished last season at No. 15 in the ITA Rankings and will look to build on that success during the 2017-18 season.
Four other veteran Cowboys return to the team this year including Artur Dubinski, Jurence Mendoza, Tristan Meraut and Julian Cash.
