Cowboy Tennis Opens Play at Cajun Classic

LAFAYETTE, La. – Oklahoma State's Jurence Mendoza won both of his matches in straight sets on Friday to secure his spot in the quarterfinals of the John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic.
In his first competitive matches of the fall season, Mendoza defeated Kentucky's Gus Benson, 6-2, 7-5, and then knocked off South Florida's Sean Burnette, 6-1, 7-6(7), to lock up a spot in the quarterfinals. Mendoza will face Big 12 foe Colin Markes of Texas in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Mendoza's performance on the first day of competition marks the fourth straight year that a Cowboy has advanced to the quarterfinals of the event.
Mendoza also advanced to the quarterfinals in the doubles bracket with freshman Maxim Tybar. Mendoza and Tybar beat host Louisiana's Pearse Dolan and Vlad Kramarov 6-2. The other Cowboy duo of Eleftherios Theodorou and Artur Dubinski also advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Austin Hussey and Ryotaro Matsumura of Kentucky 7-5.
Theodorou, Dubinski and Tybar also competed in singles action but all fell in the first round. Theodorou lost to second-seeded Leonardo Telles of Texas 6-4, 6-2. Tybar, despite his comeback effort, fell to Georgia State's Andrei Andrukhou 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Dubinski fell to Texas' John Mee, 6-2, 6-1.
Day two of the Cajun Classic is slated to begin tomorrow morning with doubles matches at 9:30 a.m., and the singles back draw will begin at 10:30 a.m.
