Cowboy and Cowgirl Cross Country Squads Remain in the Top 5 in Regional Rankings

STILLWATER — The Oklahoma State men's and women's cross country squads remained in the top-five in the Midwest Region in this week's United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's first regular season rankings announced Monday.
The Cowboys stayed at the No. 1 spot, and the Cowgirls came in at No. 4 in the region. The men stayed in the top regional spot for the 54th-straight week, which remains the longest active streak in the nation.
In the Cowboys first race of the season, sophomore Christian Liddell ran a 15:31.7 in the dual format 5k race, finishing second overall.
Also in the top 10 in the Cowboy Preview, Noah Gade finished fifth in 15:44.4 and Ryan Smeeton placed seventh in 15:50.3, giving the Cowboys three top-10 finishers.
The Cowboys went 2-1 in their opening meet of the 2017 season, defeating No. 20 Tulsa and OU, but narrowly falling to No. 4 Arkansas.
The Cowgirls dropped to No. 4 in the Midwest Region, with Missouri staying atop the Midwest rankings, Minnesota at No. 2 and conference-rival Iowa State moving up to the third spot.
In the women's 3k of the Cowboy Preview, OSU got a productive outing from sophomore Ariane Ballner with a time of 10:50.5, finishing in sixth place overall.
Also in the top-10, Sinclaire Johnson came in behind Ballner at eighth overall in 10:56.2. Kami Hankins, Emily Helms and Jennifer Celis took 25th through 27th to wrap up the Cowgirls top-five.
In the dual scores, the Cowgirls fell to No. 12 Arkansas, Tulsa and Oklahoma.
Both cross country squads will return to action on Sept. 30 at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
