Cowboy Tandem Bounced From NCAA Doubles Championship
May 26, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. – Oklahoma State tennis' Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe were knocked out of the NCAA Doubles Championship in the Round of 16 on Friday, as the duo fell to North Carolina's William Blumberg and Robert Kelly, ranked No. 12 in the nation, 4-6, 6-2, 10-5.
Despite the loss, Cash and Kadhe still earned ITA All-America honors by virtue of being selected as one of the eight national seeds for the NCAA Doubles Championship. It is the fourth honor of Kadhe's historic Oklahoma State career, and he now sits as the only four-time All-American in OSU's illustrious history. The honor is also the second in as many years at OSU for Cash, who joins Kadhe, Pavel Kudrnac, Oleksandr Nedovyesov and Jakob Sude as the only Cowboys to earn multiple All-America honors.
The All-American tandem got off to a solid start against its Tar Heel foes on Friday, winning a back-and-forth set thanks to a late break point. That break point was the first of the match, as the top-15 duos held serve through the first five changeovers before the Cowboys were able to secure the set-clinching winner.
In the second set, Cash and Kadhe looked like they were going to continue their run, keeping the match on-serve and holding a 2-1 advantage at the second changeover. From there, however, Blumberg and Kelly found a rhythm and swept the rest of the set to force a decisive tiebreak. The nation's No. 12-ranked tandem continued to build on its newfound momentum, winning seven of the first eight points before ultimately ending Cash and Kadhe's run, 4-6, 6-2, 10-5.
Cash and Kadhe finish the season with a 30-9 record in matches played together this season, which includes 14 wins over tandems ranked by the ITA. Their 30 wins as partners ties them with Mickey Coats and Steve Bailey's 1974-75 campaign for the second-most by an OSU tandem in a single season. Cash and Kadhe also own the program record though, as they posted 34 wins together a season ago.
