Cowboys Selected To Host Second-Straight NCAA Regional
May 02, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team was selected to host an NCAA Regional for the second consecutive year, as the Cowboys were named the No. 11 seed in Tuesday's NCAA Tournament bracket reveal.
Tuesday's announcement also marks Oklahoma State's fourth-straight bid to compete in the NCAA Tournament. That streak is the second longest in program history, trailing only a seven-year stretch from 2003-09 that saw the Cowboys advance to the Round of 16 on three occasions.
"We've seen over the years that any team can make a run through the tournament," head coach Jay Udwadia said. "We saw it here at OSU last year with the women's tennis team, so we're going to take it one match at a time. I want to congratulate our guys on being selected to host again this year. We were the No. 16 seed last year and now we're up to No. 11, but we want to keep going up.
"Tonight's practice for us is going to be under the lights and I think it is going to be electric. We're really looking forward to getting the tournament started."
OSU has built one of the nation's most impressive resumes this season, as the Cowboys have defeated 11 ranked foes, including four top-10 opponents, recorded their first top-two finish in the Big 12 since 2007 and made their 11th appearance in the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament.
Joining Oklahoma State in Stillwater for the regional will be Drake, No. 25 Illinois and OSU's first-round opponent, UMKC. The Cowboys knocked off UMKC in the teams' first matchup earlier this season, as they shut out the Kangaroos, 7-0, on February 12 at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
The first and second rounds of the 2017 NCAA Tournament will begin next Friday, May 12. The winners of Friday's matches will then face each other on Saturday with a spot in the Round of 16 on the line. In last year's Stillwater Regional, Oklahoma State blanked both Bryant and No. 19 Arkansas, 4-0, to secure its first trip to the Round of 16 since 2008.
OSU enters this year's event with a 13-7 record all-time in first-round matchups, which includes a 3-0 mark during head coach Jay Udwadia's tenure. The Cowboys are 1-2 during second-round contests under Udwadia, with the lone win coming over the Razorbacks in Stillwater last season.
All-session tickets for this year's regional will go on sale Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. only by phone (877-255-4678) or at the OSU Ticket Office. The tickets are $15 for all sessions, while individual day tickets will be available one hour prior to the first match of each day at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
