Cowgirls Drop Series Opener At Texas A&M
April 07, 2017 | Cowgirl Softball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Oklahoma State softball took an early lead but it wasn't enough as No. 5 Texas A&M defeated the Cowgirls in the first game of the three-game series, 9-2, Friday at the Aggie Softball Complex.Â
Kristin Reasnor's RBI single with one out in the top of the first scored Rylee Bayless to give OSU a 1-0 lead after the half inning, but five A&M runs in the bottom of the inning propelled the Aggies to the lead they wouldn't give up.
After the initial Texas A&M five-run first inning, the Cowgirls held the Aggies to four runs the remaining six innings but couldn't find enough offense to overcome the early deficit.Â
"I thought offensively we bounced back well," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Four hits and we hit some other balls well. We got back to hitting balls well. I thought we made her work and that's the key thing. That's a good pitch. SEC-type kid in a Friday night game and we had a chance there. You take away that first inning and it's a 4-2 game. Like I told our kids we just have to come out here tomorrow and answer the bell and bring our a-game."Â
Oklahoma State (25-13) jumped on the Aggies early but Texas A&M didn't panic as it produced three-consecutive hits mixed with a walk and hit by pitch to take a 5-1 lead after the first inning.Â
Texas A&M (33-3) extend its lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the second with a two-out home run to left.
The Cowgirls got on the board once more in the top of the fifth thanks to a Vanessa Shippy RBI to score Maddi Holcomb and cut the deficit to 7-2.Â
The Aggies extended their lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run.
Reasnor led the way at the plate for the Cowgirls going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Shippy also stood out at the plate going 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Brandi Needham (12-5) took the loss for the Cowgirls in the circle. Needham went five innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits with five walks. Whitney Whitehorn came out of the bullpen in relief of Needham for her first action in the circle since March 15 to close out the remaining two innings.
The loss ended a streak of four-straight Friday night wins for the Cowgirls.
