Kadhe Earns 100th Doubles Win in Cowboys' Victory Over Texas Tech
April 07, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – Oklahoma State tennis' Arjun Kadhe became the first player in team history to win 100 doubles matches, as he helped the eighth-ranked Cowboys defeat No. 42 Texas Tech, 4-1, on Friday at the McLeod Tennis Center.
"Hitting the century mark in doubles feels unbelievable," Kadhe said. "I never would have imagined that I would get here when I came to Oklahoma State. I would like to thank my coaches and all of my doubles partners that have contributed to me reaching this landmark.
"There's still a lot left for us to play for this season and hopefully there will be many more wins to come."
Kadhe's historic win didn't come easily, however, as he and his doubles partner Julian Cash, now ranked No. 5 in the nation, squared off with 17th-ranked Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson.
The top-20 tandems traded games through the early stages of their match, but Curry and Thomson eventually put the Cowboys on their heels by going up a break and taking a 5-3 lead in the match.
Cash and Kadhe responded by winning the next three games to go up 6-5, but Curry and Thomson snapped the All-American tandem's run to force a decisive tiebreak. The duos continued to match each other in that tiebreak before Cash and Kadhe ultimately came out on top, 7-6 (5).
Cash and Kadhe's victory, along with marking the 100th doubles win in Kadhe's collegiate career, secured the doubles point for Oklahoma State.
"It was a tough match for us, especially playing against Texas Tech on the road," Kadhe said. "This is always a tough place to play and I think we got a lot of momentum from winning the doubles point and then we were able to push them hard early on in singles."
Prior to the doubles-clinching win, Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza gave Oklahoma State the upper-hand in doubles play, as the left-handers defeated Jolan Cailleau and Carlos DiLaura, 6-3, on court two. Gerch and Mendoza have now won 16 matches this season when partnering with one another, which includes victories in eight of their last 10 matches together.
OSU's triumph in doubles marked the 18th time this season that the Cowboys have claimed the all-important point. And after taking the early advantage on Friday, the Cowboys continued to build on their momentum in the ensuing singles action.
Lukas Finzelberg was the first to strike in singles play, as the senior defeated TTU's Jackson Cobb in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. The Red Raiders then followed Finzelberg's victory with a win of their own on court one, where No. 35 Jolan Cailleau defeated Julian Cash, 6-3, 6-4, to cut OSU's lead to 2-1.
Tristan Meraut quickly pushed the Cowboys' lead back to two by knocking off Pyry Hyrkkonen, 6-1, 6-4, on court five. Meraut's win marks the right-hander's 11th straight singles victory, which is the longest streak by a Cowboy this season. OSU is unbeaten in dual matches this season when Meraut is victorious in singles, going 10-0 on such occasions.
The Cowboys' victory was sealed shortly thereafter by sophomore Artur Dubinski, who bested Alex Sendegeya in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. Dubinski has now provided the match-clinching point for OSU on three occasions since joining the squad in early February.
Oklahoma State will now wrap up its weekend of Big 12 action in Texas on Sunday, as the Cowboys square off with No. 3 Baylor in Waco. First serve is currently scheduled for 2 p.m.
