Cash Earns Big 12 Player of the Week Honors
April 11, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
IRVING, Texas – Oklahoma State tennis' Julian Cash was tabbed as the Big 12 Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league announced on Tuesday. He previously earned the weekly honor on February 21.
Cash's triumph marks the fourth time he has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week during his time at Oklahoma State. Tuesday's announcement puts Cash alongside OSU legend Oleksandr Nedovyesov as the only Cowboys to claim the award on at least four occasions.
The junior earned the weekly honor after picking up a top-20 win in both singles and doubles action during OSU's Texas roadtrip this past weekend.
Cash opened the weekend in doubles, where he and partner Arjun Kadhe, now ranked No. 3 in the nation, rallied from a 5-3 deficit to topple Texas Tech's No. 17-ranked Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson, 7-6 (5). The All-American tandem's win secured the doubles for Oklahoma State and marked the duo's 25th win this season. Cash has now won 59 doubles matches during his two seasons in Stillwater, leaving him two wins shy of cracking the top-10 of OSU's all-time doubles wins list.
His success continued in singles during Sunday's comeback victory over No. 3 Baylor in Waco, as Cash overpowered Juan Benitez, ranked No. 10 in the nation, in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Cash's victory came at a crucial time for the Cowboys, who were trailing 3-2 in the match. The right-hander's win brought OSU level with the Bears before Tristan Meraut provided the clinching point on court five.
Cash, ranked No. 21 in this week's singles rankings, has won a team-high 17 singles matches this season, with nine of those victories coming against foes ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Up next for Cash and the Cowboys is their final home match of the regular season, as OSU hosts senior night at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center against Tulsa on Friday at 3 p.m. Oklahoma State will pay tribute to its four seniors after the conclusion of the match.
