OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma State's women's basketball team held off a late surge from Kansas on Friday night during the first round of the Big 12 Championship, defeating the Jayhawks 79-75 in front of 3,267 fans inside Chesapeake Energy Arena.
The Cowgirls improved to 17-13 on the year, while KU fell to 8-22.
OSU led by as many as seven in the first half before the Jayhawks battled back to take a 26-25 lead with three minutes left in the half. The Cowgirls would answer with a 7-1 run before ultimately taking a 32-29 lead at the break.
The Cowgirls pushed the margin to double digits for the first time with 3:24 to go in the third quarter on a pair of free throws from sophomore Karli Wheeler. OSU led, 56-45, heading into the fourth after senior Diana Omozee beat the buzzer with a layup.
Omozee, who finished with a career-high 21 points to go with eight rebounds, knocked down a jumper with six minutes left to put OSU up 67-52 before KU began its rally.
Over the next two minutes, the Jayhawks scored the game's next 12 points to get within three before OSU junior Kaylee Jensen knocked down a jumper to halt the run.
Omozee hit a pair of free throws and added another layup in the game's final two minutes to help OSU advance to a 6 p.m. contest against Texas tomorrow night.
Jensen logged her league-best 17th double-double, finishing with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Mandy Coleman added her sixth double-double, scoring 14 points to go with a career-high 18 rebounds.
