Gerch and Kadhe Secure Semifinal Berth
March 04, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Oklahoma State tennis' Lucas Gerch and Arjun Kadhe continued to impress at the 128th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship on Saturday, as the duo picked up two more wins to advance to the semifinals of the prestigious tournament.
Gerch and Kadhe are the top-seeded doubles team at this year's event and both of them have previously won the Pacific Coast Doubles title, with each of their victories coming in the past two seasons. Gerch captured the crown in 2015 while partnering with Nicolai Ferrigno, and Kadhe topped the field with Julian Cash a season ago.
Gerch and Kadhe, the top-seeded doubles team at this year's event, started off Saturday's action with a straight-set victory over Roy Lederman and Brandon Sutter.
The Cowboys and their opponents traded service throughout the early portion of the first set, but Gerch and Kadhe, tied at 4-4, picked up a timely break point and then put the set away by holding serve before the changeover.
Riding the wave of momentum they created in the first set, Gerch and Kadhe went on to sweep the second set to clinch the match, 6-4, 6-0, and secure their spot in the afternoon's quarterfinals.
The senior tandem found themselves trailing early in their quarterfinal matchup against Nicholas Crystal and Laurens Verboven, as they dropped the first set. Gerch and Kadhe bounced back strongly, however, as they snagged the second to split sets with their foes. Both duos trailed 3-4 in the sets that they won, but each was able to claim three straight games to secure the set.
Gerch and Kadhe continued to go back-and-forth with Crystan and Verbozen in the decisive third set before ultimately holding serve to force a tiebreak. The Cowboys, serving first, took control of the tiebreak early on, going up 4-0 on the Trojans. The duos traded points from there, and Gerch and Kadhe eventually sealed the win, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2).
The top-seeded duo will continue their weekend in Pacific Coast Doubles Championship in Sunday morning's semifinals, with the tournament's championship match scheduled to be played in the afternoon. Gerch and Kadhe will face UCLA's Martin Redlicki and Evan Zhu, the event's No. 3 seed, tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT.
