OSU Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season in Tulsa
March 18, 2017 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
TULSA – The Oklahoma State track and field program opened the outdoor season this weekend at the Tulsa Duels with six event wins and multiple top-five finishes.
All-American and Big 12 champion Molly Sughroue won the 2,000-meter steeplechase and Kaytlyn Larson finished just behind her in second. It was the first steeplechase in their Cowgirl careers, but it won't be the last.
"They're new to that event," coach Dave Smith said. "They're learning it and they ran well today, so they'll move up to the 3,000-meter distance and try that out hopefully soon."
Megan Honas made it two wins in two appearances at Tulsa Duels when she won the javelin throw with a heave of 45.79m/150-3.0 feet, and Ieva Zarankaite had a dominant weekend, winning both her main event of discus and the women's shot put.
Senior Cowgirl Katie Kehl finished third in the discus and runner-up in the shot put, and true freshman Jocelen Ruth finished in third.
"I thought the women were pretty good in the throws this weekend," Smith said. "Both days we had some nice results and I think they'll just keep getting better."
The Cowboys in the 1,500-meter run finished first through fourth, and 11th, with Heinrich van Niekerk leading the way with his first outdoor win as a Cowboy.
"The guys in the 1,500 ran well," Smith said. "This meet is always a great way to get some of the younger athletes a chance to compete and it's great to see them taking that chance and competing hard."
The other win of the day came from the Cowboy 4X100-meter relay team of Logan Daily, Tyler Jackson, Arlando Brewer-Johnson and Temitope Olonisakin. The quartet ran 41.20 for its season debut.
Olonisakin and Daily took second and fourth, respectively in the 100-meter dash in their first outdoor open race as Cowboys.
OSU's next meet will be the Arkansas Spring Invitational March 25 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
