Holliday & Teel interviews
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State won its fifth consecutive game Friday night as the 18th-ranked Cowboys recorded a 6-3 win in their series opener against Northwestern State at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Garrett Benge continued his hot hitting with a pair of home runs, while Tyler Buffett picked up the win and Carson Teel collected his first-career save as OSU improved to 12-6 on the season.
Benge provided the game's first score with a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the third, a blast that marked the third-straight game in which the Cowboy junior third baseman has homered.
The lead was short-lived, however, as David Fry led off the fourth with a round tripper of his own as the Demons (5-11) tied the score at 1-1.
But the Cowboys would answer in the bottom of the inning with what proved to be a decisive five-run rally, with each of the runs coming with two outs.
Dustin Williams got the rally started with a walk, and Cameron Dobbs delivered an RBI double as he sent a ball to left that NWSU left fielder Matt Valdez was unable to make a play on when he lost his footing. Up next, Ryan Sluder made the score 3-1 with a double to the left-center field gap.
After another walk, this one to Jon Littell, Benge stepped to the plate and crushed an offering from Nathan Jones over the right field wall and onto Duck Street. The three-run blast was Benge's team-leading fifth homer of the season.
Pitching with a 6-1 lead, Buffett got into trouble in the sixth, hitting the leadoff batter with a pitch and then giving up a one-out single. After an RBI groundout and a walk, Buffett's night was done as Teel came out of the bullpen facing a two-on and two-out situation and struck out Tyler Smith to get out of the jam.
Teel continued to pile up strikeouts over the final 3 1/3 innings as he struck out eight of the 12 batters he faced and allowed just one run on two hits.
In improving to 3-2, Buffett allowed two runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings while striking out six.
Along with Benge, Andrew Rosa and Williams also went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Cowboys, who collected nine hits in the contest.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 4 p.m.
