Cowgirls Run Rule EKU To Close Ole Miss Classic
March 12, 2017 | Cowgirl Softball
With the win over EKU, the Cowgirls moved to 4-1 in the Ole Miss Classic and won six of their last seven games.
"Our bats were really hot," Logan Simunek said. "We've been hitting the ball really well and that's helping us with our mental game because once one person starts hitting everyone picks up on it. And that helps. The more runs we score the better we do. We're happy to play right now and ready to be back out there."
Oklahoma State (18-10) started the scoring effort early with two runs in the top of the first. Kristin Reasnor and Mackenzie Thomas had RBIs to help the Cowgirls jump ahead.
Reasnor continued her scoring ways in the second with a two-out RBI single that scored Maddi Holcomb and Taylor Lynch, making it 4-0. Madi Sue Montgomery followed with an RBI double on the next pitch to score Reasnor and gave OSU a 5-0 lead.
OSU didn't stop there as it scored 10 runs on seven hits in the third inning. Randee O'Donnell capped off the inning with a two out, two-run home run to give OSU a 15-0 lead.
EKU wouldn't go down without a fight as it scored two in the third and six in the bottom of the fourth to cut the OSU lead to 16-8 but it wouldn't be enough.
The Cowgirls responded once more with five runs in the top of the fifth thanks to RBIs from Rylee Bayless,, Lynch and Reasnor to extend its lead to the eventual 21-8 lead it wouldn't give up.
Simunek (5-1) earned the win in the circle for the Cowgirls. She went three innings allowing just two runs on six hits to earn her fifth win of the year.
O'Donnell led the way at the plate for the Cowgirls going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, including a two-run home run in the top of the third. Alongside O'Donnell, Reasnor also shined going 4-for-5 with six RBIs.
"We're just taking it game-by-game," O'Donnell said. "See ball, hit ball. That's our mentality right now. We have a lot of confidence at the plate right now and its hard to stop a team when they have confidence."
In its seven games this week, Oklahoma State outscored its opponents to 77-19 on its way to its six wins.
