Cowboy Tennis Cracks Top-Five of ITA Rankings
February 28, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team continued to ascend the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Rankings this week, as the Cowboys moved up three spots to No. 5 in Tuesday's rankings.
OSU's ranking matches the team's highest recorded position on record in program history. The squad cracked the top-five for the first time last season, doing so on three separate occasions.
The Cowboys' climb into the top-five this week comes after OSU recorded two top-25 road victories this past weekend. The Pokes first defeated No. 25 Minnesota, 5-2, last Friday before dropping No. 13 Northwestern, 4-1, for the second time in nine days on Sunday. OSU has defeated seven ranked opponents this season, including three teams ranked in the top-15.
There were no updated individual rankings released this week, meaning that the five ranked Cowboys will hold in their current spots for another week.
Julian Cash is currently Oklahoma State's highest-ranked singles competitor, as the junior has moved up 23 spots in recent weeks and currently sits at No. 18. Cash has posted an 11-5 mark in singles this season and has defeated seven ranked opponents.
Cash is joined in the singles rankings by Arjun Kadhe, who occupies the No. 69 spot, and Lukas Finzelberg, ranked No. 102. Kadhe's ranking is just three spots off of his career-best mark. The senior has been instrumental in OSU's success this season, as he has gone 9-2 during the dual-match season this spring.
Cash and Kadhe are also ranked in doubles, as they sit at No. 4 in the rankings. The All-American duo added two more wins this past weekend to bring their total to 19 for the season. The duo has been ranked in the top-five of the ITA Ranking for the all of the 2016-17 season up to this point.
Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza also hold a spot in the doubles rankings, as they currently sit at No. 31. Gerch and Mendoza's ranking marks the highest doubles ranking for either individual, regardless of partner.
Oklahoma State's spring season continues this week, as the fifth-ranked Cowboys head to the west coast for a match against No. 9 Michigan on Thursday in La Jolla, California. After their match against the Wolverine, OSU will then take part in the 128th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship, which also begins on Thursday.
An OSU tandem has won the prestigious tournament in each of the past two seasons, with Lucas Gerch and Nicolai Ferrigno winning in 2015 and Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe taking the crown last season.
