February 21, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team moved up four spots to No. 8 in this week's Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Team Rankings, which were released on Tuesday.
The eighth-ranked Cowboys are coming off their first appearance at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship since 2008. OSU knocked off sixth-seeded Northwestern, 4-2, in the opening round of play to earn their highest-ranked victory since defeating No. 6 Tennessee in January of 2014.
Julian Cash was the Cowboys' biggest mover in the singles ranking, as he jumped up 14 spots to No. 18 in this week's rankings. Cash picked up two victories over top-25 opponents this past weekend at national indoors, defeating No. 25 Strong Kirchheimer (Northwestern) in a three-set thriller and then dropping No. 5 Christian Sigsgaard (Texas), 6-3, 6-4, in the Cowboys' weekend finale. If you look back at the past two weeks, Cash has moved up 23 spots in the singles ranking from No. 41 to his current spot at No. 18.
The right-hander is joined by his doubles partner Arjun Kadhe, who sits at No. 69, and senior Lukas Finzelberg, ranked No. 102, in this week's singles rankings.
Kadhe has been vital to the Cowboys' success so far this season, posting an impressive 8-1 mark in singles dual-match action in the spring. The senior's No. 69 ranking is the second highest of his career and trails his best mark by just three spots.
Cash and Kadhe both also moved up in the doubles rankings this week, as they jumped up one spot to No. 4. The duo has been ranked inside of the top five for all of the 2016-17 season to this point.
The Cowboy tandem has collected 17 wins this season with eight of those victories coming against opponents ranked by the ITA. Cash and Kadhe won their 50th match when teaming together this past weekend at the ITA National Indoor Championship, dropping No. 53 Sam Shropshire and Konrad Zieba of Northwestern, 6-4, to secure the doubles point for the Cowboys.
OSU's Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza also hold a spot in the doubles rankings, leaping up 19 spots to No. 31 in this week's polls. The duo picked up its second ranked victory of the season this past weekend, knocking off Texas' No. 27 Yuya Ito and Harrison Scott, 6-3.
Oklahoma State will continue the dual-match season this weekend, as the Cowboys head north for a Friday-night matchup with Minnesota before a rematch with No. 7 Northwestern on Sunday.
