Cash Earns Cowboys' Second Straight Big 12 Weekly Honor
February 21, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
IRVING, Texas – Oklahoma State tennis' Julian Cash was named the Big 12 Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. Cash's nomination marks the second straight week that a Cowboy has earned the conference honor after Arjun Kadhe achieved the feat last week.
Tuesday's announcement marks the third time that Cash has earned the award in his career, having done so twice last season. It is also the sixth time that a Cowboy has won the award during head coach Jay Udwadia's tenure.
Cash is coming off an impressive weekend at the ITA National Indoor Championship, where he recorded two singles wins over top-25 opponents. The right-hander also picked up two more doubles victories, including his 50th win with partner Arjun Kadhe.
The junior's signature win of this past weekend came in the Cowboys' final matchup of the weekend, as he dropped No. 5 Chrisitan Sigsgaard of Texas in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Cash's victory over Sigsgaard marks the first time that the Brighton, England native has dropped a top-five opponent in singles since joining the Cowboys prior to last season.
Cash, ranked No. 32 in the nation, stormed out of the gates against the Longhorn, breaking Sigsgaard in the early stages of the first set to go up 4-1. The junior used his strong service and pinpoint returns to press on and snag the first set.
In the second set, the two heavyweights opened with a sequence of exchanged service before Cash again secured the timely break point. Cash, serving for match point, continued to hammer away before locking up his 10th singles win of the season.
The right-hander's first victory of the weekend, however, came on Friday in OSU's opening matchup against seventh-ranked Northwestern, as he bested No. 25 Strong Kirchheimer in three sets, 6-1, 6-7, 6-4.
Cash trailed the Wildcat, 4-2, in the decisive third set, but captured the final four games, including his first two break points since the first set, to clinch the match for OSU, 4-2. Oklahoma State's win over No. 7 Northwestern marked the Cowboys' highest-ranked victory since defeating No. 6 Tennessee at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center in January 2014.
In doubles action, Cash and partner Arjun Kadhe, who make up the nation's No. 5 tandem, collected two more wins this past weekend. Cash and Kadhe first dropped No. 53 Sam Shropshire and Konrad Zieba of Northwestern, 6-4, to secure the doubles point for OSU. The duo's victory over the Wildcats marked their 50th win as a tandem since first pairing up at the start of last season.
Cash and Kadhe continued to roll in Sunday's matchup with the Longhorns, earning their 17th win of the season by besting Texas' George Goldhoff and Leo Telles, 6-2, to clinch OSU's ninth doubles point of the season. The tandem has recorded the doubles-clinching win on five occasions this season.
Oklahoma State will continue the dual-match season this weekend, as the Cowboys head north for a Friday-night matchup with Minnesota before a rematch with No. 7 Northwestern on Sunday.
