FORT WORTH, Texas -- Leyton Hammonds scored 21 points, Jeffrey Carroll added 17 and Oklahoma State continued its Big 12 surge with a 71-68 victory against TCU on Wednesday night.
Jawun Evans posted his second career double-double with 16 points and a career-high 12 assists as the Cowboys won for the sixth time in seven conference games since opening at 0-6.
Hammonds' 21 points is a season-high for the senior, 15 of which came from behind the arc. He also led the team, along with Carroll, in rebounds.
Oklahoma State is now even with TCU for fifth place in the Big 12 with a season sweep of the Horned Frogs.
Brandon Averette hit two free throws after a steal by Carroll to give Oklahoma State a 68-67 lead with 1:03 remaining. After a block from Mitchell Solomon, Evans hit a long jumper for a three-point lead with 13 seconds remaining. The Horned Frogs didn't call timeout, and Kenrich Williams and Alex Robinson each missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds.
Hammonds, who went to high school just a few miles from the TCU campus, scored 16 points in the first half, and Carroll had a 3-pointer that gave the Cowboys their biggest lead at 54-45 with 12 minutes remaining. With just over nine minutes left to play, TCU went on a 10-0 run, which gave them a 60-57 lead, but the Cowboys would ultimately get the win.
JD Miller scored 16 points for TCU, and Williams had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The sweep is the Cowboys' first of the season. OSU took the first meeting with the Horned Frogs, 89-76, in Stillwater on Jan. 23. OSU's last Big 12 sweep was during the 2014-15 season.
The Cowboys' NCAA Tournament hopes are alive thanks to seven wins in eight games, including a victory against Arkansas in the SEC-Big 12 Challenge.
Tonight's win gives the Cowboys their sixth road win of the season. The last time OSU won more than six road games was in 2004-05 with seven wins on the road. OSU moves to 17-9 on the year and 6-7 in Big 12 play.
Up Next:
The Cowboys will return home to take on Oklahoma in the year's second installment of the Bedlam rivalry. The Cowboys took a dramatic 68-66 win over the Sooners in Norman back on Jan. 30. Tipoff from Gallagher-Iba Arena is slated for Saturday at 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
