Cowboys Split Sunday Doubleheader in Stillwater
February 12, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team split a doubleheader on Sunday at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center, as the 12th-ranked Cowboys fell to No. 2 Wake Forest, 4-3, before knocking off UMKC, 7-0, in the nightcap.
Oklahoma State's win over UMKC pushed the Cowboys to 7-1 on the season. Their victory on Sunday also marks the third time that the Cowboys have won seven of their first eight matches during head coach Jay Udwadia's tenure.
"After the first match against Wake Forest, we wanted to come out and be very professional and business-like in that second match," Udwadia said. "That second match was a very clean match for us. We knew that UMKC was going to come here and play hard, and they did just that. We have a lot of leadership on our team and I was happy with they way they showed up tonight."
The Cowboys claimed the doubles point for the seventh time this season, as they picked up wins on courts one in three to secure the all-important point.
Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza, ranked No. 50 in the nation, were the first to claim victory for OSU, going over Uldis Gaismins and Amaury Navette, 6-1. Just moments after their teammates' win, Arjun Kadhe and partner Mathieu Scaglia dispacted of UMKC's Vinh Pham and Hunter Clark, 6-3, to lock up the doubles point.
Oklahoma State's depth was on full display in Sunday's singles action , as the Cowboys pulled three of the starters from their lineup against Wake Forest. Even with a much-changed lineup, the Cowboys overpowered UMKC en route to OSU's fourth shut-out victory of the season.
Senior Nathan Roper was the first Cowboy to tally a win in singles play, as the Edmond, Oklahoma native blitzed past Hunter Clark in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Roper's win was quickly followed by Lucas Gerch on court two and freshman Mathieu Scaglia on court five, sealing the match for the Cowboys. Scaglia's 6-0, 6-3, win over Vinh Pham was the first singles dual-match victory for the freshman from France.
With victory secured, OSU's final three competitors played out their matches on the remaining courts.
Jurence Mendoza was the next to secure a point for OSU, as the junior knocked off Amaury Navette, 6-0, 6-3 on court three. Mendoza's win gives him a team-high 13 this season. His win on court three was followed up shortly thereafter by Tristan Meraut on four, who knocked off Tom Kruse by the same score.
Arjun Kadhe, playing on court one, wrapped up the shutout with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Airam Castellano. It was the 12th win of the season for the senior, who now sits at 67 for his career.
Prior to the win over the Kangaroos, Oklahoma State dropped its first match of the season, falling to No. 2 Wake Forest, 4-3.
The Cowboys' struggles started when they lost the doubles point for the first time this season. Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe were the first to fall in doubles play, as they nation's top-ranked tandem of Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim defeated the Cowboys, 6-2. Wake Forest locked up the doubles point just minutes later with a win from Petros Chrysochos and Dennis Uspensky.
As singles play began, the Cowboys found themselves in a deeper hole after dropping matches on courts one and two against opponents ranked in the top 10 of the ITA Rankings. Senior Arjun Kadhe sparked the Oklahoma State comeback though, as he rolled through Christian Seraphim, ranked No. 26 in the nation, 6-1, 6-3, to get the Pokes on the board.
Jurence Mendoza soon followed suit on court six, going over Dennis Uspensky in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. His doubles partner, Lucas Gerch, brought the Greenwood Tennis Center to its feet minutes later, as the German international dropped Alan Gadjieve, 7-6 (6), 6-1, to tie the match at 3-3.
The Cowboys' comeback attempt hinged on the result of court three, where newcomer Artur Dubinski was going back and forth with Wake's Borna Gojo.
The two competitors continued to exchange serve late in the second set before Dubinski was able to hold from deuce to force a tiebreak. The two exchanged tough points, but Gojo was able to secure the second set and the win for Wake Forest.
"It was a tough loss for us, but we can take some positives from it," Udwadia said. "We like to dwell on the positives of it. We showed today that we're able to compete with the best of the best and that's what we're going to be facing next week at National Indoors."
Udwadia and the Cowboys will now head to Charlottesville, Virgina, where they will compete in this year's ITA National Team Indoor Championship. The event set to get underway on Friday, February 17, with the draws set to be released later this week.
The Cowboys' trip to National Indoors will mark their first appearance at the national-championship event since 2008.
