Cowgirls Outlast Kansas State To Win Big 12 Home Opener

STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State's women's basketball team held off a strong second-half surge from Kansas State on Sunday to win its Big 12 home opener, 76-68, in front of 2,277 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.

The Cowgirls (11-2, 2-0) got out of the gate quickly, scoring 14 of the game's first 16 points. K-State (8-5, 0-2) would close the first period with the final four points to get back within six at 19-13.

In the second, graduate transfer logged one of her game-high six steals before junior Karli Wheeler ultimately found sophomore Areanna Combs for a layup with 3:53 to go in the half. The basket capped a 10-0 run and staked OSU to its largest lead of the game at 38-19.

The Cowgirls would lead 42-26 at the break.

With OSU leading by 18 with three minutes to go in the third, the Wildcats started to mount their charge, using an 11-3 run to get with 10 at 57-47 heading into the final period.

K-State cut the margin to just four with just under seven minutes to go before senior Kaylee Jensen hit a jumper and Combs knocked down a trey from the wing to push the lead back to nine with five minutes to go.Â

Goodwin got fouled and converted the old-fashioned 3-point play two minutes later to give OSU a 72-60 lead, but K-State got within seven with a minute to go, but could get no closer.

Goodwin led all scorers with 21 points to go with 11 rebounds to go with four assists. Jensen logged her second consecutive double-double, scoring 19 points to go with 18 rebounds and four assists of her own.

Senior Mandy Coleman added 17 points, while Combs finished with 10.

The Cowgirls will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Austin, Texas to face the Texas Longhorns at 7 p.m.
