STILLWATER – Oklahoma State completed its regular season home schedule with a perfect mark as the 19th-ranked Cowgirls topped Kansas, 3-1, Sunday on Senior Day at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
Â
With the win, the Cowgirls improved to 14-2-2 on the season, which includes a 9-0-0 showing on their home field, and also continued to remain alone atop the Big 12 Conference standings with a 7-1-0 record in league play. The seven Big 12 wins are the most by a Cowgirl squad since the 2010 team had a school-record eight.
Â
All of the scoring in the match came after intermission, with Haley Woodard, Laurene Tresfield and Anna Beffer each finding the back of the net for the Cowgirls. Goalie Michela Ongaro finished with four saves in her final home game.
Â
Kansas (8-8-2, 3-4-1) outshot the Cowgirls in the match by a 22-15 margin, but OSU owned a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Jayhawks recorded the only two shots on goal in the opening half, but Ongaro collected pair of saves to send the match into halftime scoreless.
Â
OSU did not need long to get on the scoreboard in the second half. In the 49th minute, Woodard gained control of the ball in the box, beat the keeper and then delivered a shot from near the endline to the far post to put the Cowgirls up 1-0. The goal marked Woodard's team-leading seventh of the season.
Â
The lead was short-lived, however, as KU managed the equalizer less than five minutes later. Off a free kick, Sophie Maierhofer sent a ball into the box that Ceri Holland flicked to Grace Hagen, who sent a six-yard shot past Ongaro to make the score 1-1.
Â
This time, OSU would answer, and the Cowgirls needed just 52 seconds to do so. After a foul just outside the box, Kim Rodriguez stepped up and delivered a perfect ball in front of the goal where Tresfield was there to head it to the far post for her first goal of the season and a 2-1 OSU lead.
Â
OSU sealed the win with nine minutes remaining in the match when Beffer chipped a ball over the keeper to the far post from the corner of the 18-yard box to put the home team up, 3-1. The goal was Beffer's fourth of the season.
Â
The Cowgirls now look to the final game of the regular season to try and clinch the sixth Big 12 championship in program history. OSU will face Texas Friday at 7 p.m. in Austin — a win or a tie against the Longhorns will guarantee the Cowgirls a conference title.
