Cowgirls Keep Rolling at ITA Regionals

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team wrapped up its third day of action Saturday at the ITA Central Regional Championships, advancing three Cowgirls into the singles quarterfinals and one OSU tandem into the semifinals of the doubles draw.

The Cowgirls have been dominant throughout the first three days of the event, winning 21 of their 23 matches thus far.

"Our girls have been very focused throughout the weekend so far and that has shown in their level of play," head coach Chris Young said. "Obviously, the next two days will bring greater challenges but I am proud of our efforts to this point and the development I am seeing from each player."

The day started in doubles, as the second-seeded duo of Vladica Babic and Sofia Blanco tallied a pair of wins to clinch a spot in the semis. The Cowgirls dropped Minnesota's River Hart and Caroline Ryba, the No. 9 seeds, 8-2, in the round of 16 before edging Zoe Douglas and Elise Van Heuvlen, 8-6, in the quarters. The No. 15 doubles team in the nation, Babic and Blanco are now 6-2 on the year as a duo.

Katarina Stresnakova and Marina Guinart couldn't pull the upset in their round of 16 match, coming up short in an 8-4 match against No. 32 Amina Ismail and Marta Oliveira of Missouri.

Guinart advanced to the singles quarterfinals with her fourth straight-set win of the weekend. The Cowgirl newcomer tallied a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kansas State's Margo Decker to set up a quarterfinal matchup with Tulsa's Martina Okalova on Sunday.

Stresnakova also won, 6-1, 6-1, eliminating Maria Toren Ribes, to advance into the quarterfinals. The No. 9-seeded Cowgirl will take on No. 62 Leolia Jeanjean Sunday for a spot in the semis.

Vladica Babic wrapped up the day for the Pokes, as she handled Kansas State's Ines Mesquita, 6-3, 6-1, to advance through. She will look for a semifinal spot as well, matched up against Iowa's Zoe Douglas, the No. 6 seed.

Blanco would come up short in her match, falling 6-1, 6-2 to Debbie Vogasari of Kansas.
