Carroll One Of 20 Named To Julius Erving Award Watch List
October 18, 2017 | Cowboy Basketball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State wing Jeffrey Carroll was one of 20 players named to the watch list for the 2018 Julius Erving Award, which is given annually to the nation's best small forward.
The Big 12 Conference's highest returning scorer, Carroll poured in 17.5 points and 6.6 rebounds per game while shooting 44.4 percent from 3-point last season. In fact, he became just the fourth player in Big 12 history to ever rank in the top 10 in each of those statistical categories, joining Georges Niang (Iowa State, 2015-16), Jordan Hamilton (Texas, 2010-11) and Kevin Durant (Texas, 2006-07).
Carroll entered the 2016-17 season with a career high scoring game of 18 points, but tied or topped that mark 20 times, including 15 20-point performances last year. Those accolades earned him second-team All-Big 12 honors and a first-team All-District nod from the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Last week, the Big 12 coaches voted him one of five players on the Preseason All-Big 12 team.
By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the Julius Erving Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Erving and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the 2018 Julius Erving Award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show presented by Wendy's in Los Angeles on April 6, 2018.
Previous winners of the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award include Josh Hart, Villanova (2017), Denzel Valentine, Michigan State (2016) and Stanley Johnson, Arizona (2015). For more information on the 2018 Julius Erving Award, log onto www.HoophallAwards.com.
