Second Serve: Cowboy Tennis Opens Season With Doubleheader Sweep
January 23, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – The 14th-ranked Oklahoma State men's tennis team began its spring season with victories over Texas Rio Grande Valley, 6-1, and Oral Roberts, 7-0, on Saturday at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
The victories push the Cowboys to 8-1 on opening day under head coach Jay Udwadia, with their only loss coming against 19th-ranked Tennessee in 2013.
Before the action began on Saturday, Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe spoke earlier in the week about their goals for the upcoming season. The pair is coming off of a historic 2016 that saw them capture the Pacific Coast Doubles and ITA Central Regional titles, record the most single-season doubles victories in team history (34), earn All-America honors and become the first Oklahoma State tandem to be ranked No. 1 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Not ones to rest on their laurels, Cash and Kadhe opened the spring season for the Cowboys with a pair of victories at the Greenwood Tennis Center, rolling through UTRGV's Elliot Johnstone and Clement Sarradin, 6-1, before dropping Oral Roberts' Jan Pehnec and Kenneth Boykin, 6-2, in the nightcap.
Their victory over Johnstone and Sarradin was the pair's 11th this season and the one that secured the Cowboys' first doubles point of the year.
Saturday's triumphs also saw senior Arjun Kadhe continue to climb up Oklahoma State's all-time doubles wins list. The Pune, India native is currently third on that list with 79 victories and needs just one more to tie Cliff Price for second place. If the Cowboy can win 13 more matches during the spring, he will match Charlie Laster's team record of 92 doubles victories.
Coach Udwadia spoke with the media after the Cowboys' first action of the spring and his thoughts on Mathieu Scaglia's first collegiate dual match. Take a listen to what he said in the video below.
Lukas Finzelberg, ranked No. 30 in the nation, was another Cowboy who starred on Saturday for OSU as he picked up his 10th victory of the season, besting Jan Pehnec in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. It was all smiles in Stillwater for Finzelberg and his teammates after Saturday's victories.
OSU will be back in action this weekend when the Cowboys host the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Kickoff Weekend at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center. They're set to face No. 23 Columbia at 3:30 p.m. on Friday while in-state foe Tulsa and 15th-ranked Kentucky make up the other half of the field.
