Oklahoma State Game Notes
The Basics
• Oklahoma State had its four-game win streak halted by No. 11/12 West Virginia last week, but the Cowboys return to the road, where they've had success. OSU has won its last two road games - at Tulsa and Wichita State - and is 4-2 away from Gallagher-Iba Arena this season, with the only losses coming to 4/4 North Carolina in Maui and by one point at RV/22 Maryland. OSU and Texas have split their last four meetings in Austin, although the Longhorns swept the two games against OSU last season. UT is 6-2 at home this season.
On the Air
• Oklahoma State will make just its second appearance on the Longhorn Network, and Lowell Galindo, Lance Blanks and Alex Loeb will have the call. The Cowboys took down Texas, 65-63, in overtime in their only other LHN appearance on Feb. 4, 2015. As always, Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb will have the Cowboy Radio Network call from the Frank Erwin Center.
Oklahoma State Snapshot
• At 99-17, Brad Underwood is on the verge of becoming one of the fastest coaches to reach 100 wins in the history of college basketball. With 89 wins in his time at Stephen F. Austin, Underwood tied Brad Stevens of Butler for the most victories by any coach after three seasons. Currently, Underwood's .853 career win percentage ranks behind only Buck Freeman (.914, St. Johns, '28-31) and Adolph Rupp (.882, Kentucky, '31-34) for the best win percentage ever by a fourth-year coach.
• OSU leads the Big 12 and ranks fourth in the country in scoring at 91.9 points per game, but their high-pressure defense is the main reason why. The Cowboys rank fifth in the country with 10.4 steals per game and third in turnovers forced at 20.0. According to KenPom, OSU is holding opponents to an average possession of just 14.9 seconds - the shortest in the country - and they rank third in turnover percentage with a mark of 25.4.
• One of the nation's elite point guards, Jawun Evans is taking the nation by storm this season. The sophomore is coming off his first career double-double with 15 points and 11 assists, and leads the Big 12 in scoring at 19.8 points per game and is second in steals at 2.3 per game (17th nationally). KenPom currently rates him as the No. 14 offensive threat in the nation. The Naismith Trophy and Cousy Award watch list member has six 20-point games and three 30-point games this season alone, and he also earned a spot on the Maui Invitational All-Tournament team. Evans also ranks among the league's top 10 in assists (5th, 5.2 apg) and free throw percentage (6th, 76.3%), and he owns two of the Big 12's top three scoring performances this season - 35 points against UConn, and 34 points against Campbell.
• After relatively slow starts, OSU's senior captains have heated up over the last few games. Phil Forte has scored in double-figures in each of his last three games, and is 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) from 3-point over the last two. Forte leads the nation in free throw percentage at 97.8 (44-of-45) and his lone miss this year came back on Nov. 21. Leyton Hammonds is averaging 11.8 points and 6.0 rebounds over his last four games, and is 15-of-30 (50.0 percent) shooting over that span.
• Oklahoma State pushes the tempo on offense. OSU is sixth nationally with 78.1 possessions per game, and they rank 19th in KenPom's offensive efficiency rating. In fact, the Cowboys average 8.8 more shots per game than their opponents. OSU also knows how to get to the free throw line, where they rank sixth nationally in free throws made (22.2). The Cowboys have made 45 more free throws than the next closest Big 12 team, West Virginia.
• At an average of 40.0 points per game, the Cowboy bench ranks fifth nationally in scoring. OSU's bench averages 43.0 percent of its minutes, which ranks 13th nationally. The Cowboy bench has been responsible for 36-plus points in nine games this season, including three games with 58-plus points.
• Underwood has called OSU's freshmen "fearless" and no player exemplifies that attitude like Thomas Dziagwa. A coach's son, Dziagwa leads the Big 12 with a mark of 51.3 percent from 3-point, including a 54.2 percent (13-of-24) clip over the last five games. At Tulsa, Dziagwa hit a trio of 3-pointers over the final 10 minutes and the game-clinching free throws, and he hit 3-of-4 from downtown at Wichita State.
• Jeffrey Carroll has been a scoring and rebounding machine this season. The redshirt-junior remains the Big 12's only player ranked inside the league's top seven in scoring (5th, 15.6 ppg), rebounding (7th, 7.2 rpg) and field goal percentage (7th, .560). Carroll has four 20-point games this year, and pulled down a career-high 12 boards at Maryland.
• The Cowboys have cleaned up on the offensive glass this year. OSU is fifth nationally with 15.92 offensive boards per game and fifth in offensive rebound percentage at 41.1 percent. A true team effort, only one player on the team ranks inside the top 100 in the country in offensive boards (Mitchell Solomon, 92nd at 2.77 per game). The Cowboys have pulled down 15-plus offensive boards in nine games this year, including six of the last seven outings. Solomon posted nine offensive boards against TAMU-CC, which is only one off the school record.
Texas Connections & Snapshot
• This will be the second meeting between head coaches Brad Underwood and Shaka Smart, although the two were at previous schools for the first showdown in the opening round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Underwood's Stephen F. Austin squad closed out regulation on a four-point play from Desmond Haymon to tie the game at 67, and then closed out Smart's VCU team 10-8 in overtime to advance. The Lumberjacks (32-2) trailed the Rams (26-9) by five points (66-61) with 32 seconds remaining and made a charge in the final minute. Jacob Parker (Bixby, Okla.) led SFA offensively with 22 points, while Traveon Graham led VCU with 19.
• Texas was tabbed to finish third in the Big 12 in the annual preseason coaches poll thanks to a stable of young talent. Sophomores Tevin Mack (14.3 ppg) and Kerwin Roach, Jr. (10.9 ppg), and freshmen Jarrett Allen (10.9 ppg, 7.4 rpg) and Andrew Jones (9.4 ppg) lead the Longhorns on both ends of the court.
• The Longhorns are coming off a narrow 65-62 loss at Kansas State. Jarrett Allen posted 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds and Texas held the Wildcats to 36.2 percent shooting, but 18 points from Dean Wade and 16 points from Barry Brown was too much to overcome. The Longhorns made a late run at the Wildcats but Kamau Stokes made free throws to seal the victory.
• Texas leads the series with the Cowboys 48-41 overall, including a 28-13 edge in Austin. The Longhorns swept the two-game series last season, but OSU took both meetings in 2015. The two schools have split the last four meetings in the Frank Erwin Center.
• Leyton Hammonds found success against the Longhorns last season. Then a junior, Hammonds averaged 19.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game on 48.4 percent shooting. In the last trip to Austin, Hammonds posted 18 points and nine rebounds, then tallied 20 points and six rebounds in Stillwater.
An Oklahoma State Win Would ...
• Give Brad Underwood his 100th career victory in his 117th game, which would tie him for the fourth fastest to reach that plateau. He would be tied with Jerry Tarkanian (1973 at Long Beach State) and Jim Boeheim (1980 at Syracuse). In college basketball history, only Missouri's Doc Meanwell in 1918 (100-9), Buck Freeman of St. John's in 1932 (100-10) and Kentucky legend Adolph Rupp in 1936 (100-16) reached the milestone faster.
• Extend OSU's road win streak to three. The last time Oklahoma State won three straight true road games was in 2012-13 when they won five straight road games in February. This season, OSU enters Wednesday's contest at Texas 4-2 away from home this season, including a 2-1 mark in true road contests.
• Snap OSU's seven-game losing streak in Big 12 play. An injured Cowboy squad lost its final six Big 12 contests last season, and West Virginia took down OSU in the 2016-17 conference opener last week.
• Move OSU to 1-1 in Big 12 play. The Cowboys haven't started 0-2 in conference play since 1996-97 - the first year of the Big 12.
• Close Oklahoma State's gap in the overall series with Texas to 48-42, and give the Cowboys three wins in their last five trips to Austin.
• Improve OSU's mark in Big 12 play to 259-154 overall.
