Cowboys Wrap Up Day One In Napa
September 09, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State freshman Mathieu Scaglia earned his first career singles win on Friday as the Cowboys opened up their fall season in the first round of the Silverado Resort & Spa's College Invitational.
After dropping the first set, Scaglia rallied back to knock off Cal Poly's Garrett Auproux in a three-set thriller, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. The Frejus, France native joins the Cowboys this season after dominating in his native country, where he is ranked as one of the top-10 junior players.
"During the first set I was stressed so I lost (the set), 6-4," Scaglia said. "But then I decided to just put the ball in the court, fight on every point and see what happened. I did that during the next two sets and it worked and I was able to win."
OSU picked up one other win in singles action as Jurence Mendoza was able to knock off Cal Poly's Ben Donovan in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Mendoza figures to play a key role for the Cowboys this season after posting a 10-2 record in singles during the spring as well as compiling 25 doubles wins a season ago.
"In the first set I was feeling sluggish. My legs were feeling heavy and I was giving away a lot of free points," Mendoza said. "In the second set I started to play better and smarter. This was my first match in a long time and was a good test for me. I'm glad to get the win."
The Cowboys dropped the remaining two singles matches against a tough Mustang squad as Nathan Roper fell to Josh Ortlip and Tristan Meraut lost a hard-fought three-set match against Corey Pang. OSU also came up just short in doubles play as the Cowboys' two tandems dropped close matches against San Francisco.
The Cowboys will be back in action on Saturday with the second round of matches slated to begin at 12:30 p.m. CT.
